Paula Abdul Dishes on the Idol Auditions

October 15, 2007

It just wouldn’t be American Idol without a little name-calling from Simon Cowell, now would it?

“He [now] calls Randy and I ‘Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.’ I’m Dee, Randy’s the Dum!” Paula Abdul told PEOPLE over the weekend at Lili Claire Foundation’s 10th Annual Benefit Dinner and Auction.

She says Cowell came up with the unflattering name during the audition process for the show’s upcoming season, which recently wrapped up.

“What’s happening is Randy and I have been agreeing on the talent as he disagrees,” says Abdul. “He thinks we don’t know what we’re talking about, and the truth is Randy and I do know what we’re talking about. It’s Randy and Paula against Simon. I’m on the winning side!”

Despite the teasing, Abdul says that she and Cowell, who have a love-hate relationship, are getting along. “In the past couple of cities we’ve had no arguments. He’s still pestering me like hell, but we get along pretty well.”

Jackson, meanwhile, sums up Cowell’s attitude by saying: “He’s cranky.”

But the bright side is that the audition process has been “really, really good, I must say,” Jackson tells PEOPLE. “You still get the crazy buffoonery going on, but for the most it’s been pretty good. I would say somebody with skin and teeth is definitely going to win!”

And Abdul agrees. “Last season, I’m going to be real honest, I wasn’t as excited, I wasn’t sure, I wasn’t certain. As the season progressed it was fun to see how Jordin [Sparks] really came through, and she’s such an amazing kid. This season the auditions [have] some very, very exciting talent. All different—good-looking kids, crazy kids, great back stories, interesting backgrounds, and kids that really went out there, went out on a unique limb to be different and to capture our attention.”

Still, not everyone is hitting the right notes with the judges, Abdul concedes. “Oh God, there’s going to be one person who’s probably going to have a bigger career than William Hung, let me tell you!” —Jenny Sundel

Amanda Loves BLAKE! October 15th, 2007

This made me really excited! Someone worse than William Hung!? WHOA! ;P

And I still don’t think that this past Season 6 can be beaten…Blake, Sanjaya, Gina, Melinda…nuh uh, no way…this group was AMAZING…and by far the BEST! :]

I mean, I could be a bit biased because I met and befriended them and all…but they’re amazing live in concert and talking to them in person you could tell that they’re really genuine, sweet people who care about their fans! :)

My advice for all Idol fans: Buy Blake Lewis’ CD on 12.04.07…it’s going to be the most amazing thing EVER! :D

I think Simn Cowel is to hard on Paula and Randy. I like most of the people he doesn’t so he should re-evaluate what he thinks is good music.

THERE IS NOTHING HONEST ABOUT AMERICAN IDOL. PRODUCERS CHOOSE PEOPLE INTIALLY BEFORE THE AUDTIONS IN FRONT OF THE IDOL PANEL EVEN BEGINS. THE PRODUCERS ARE MORE INTERESTED IN GETTING PEOPLE WHO WILLING TO MAKE FOOL OF THEMSELVES THEN THEY ARE REAL TALENT. MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE SINGING TALENT ARE TURNED AWAY IN FAVOR OF CHOOSING THOSE WHO WILL GET ON T.V AND MAKE AN A– OUT OF THEMSELVES.

What does Simon Cowell know about music anyway

David October 15th, 2007

wow! Hey anonymous
#1 you sound like a bitter ai reject.
#2 everybody knows producers are involved in the selection process so don’t act like you’re telling people something they don’t already know.
#3 if your going to bitc@ about something, at least have the guts to list your name as something other than “anonymous”

david-ru the king of american idol? SHUT up!!

Joanne October 16th, 2007

I think Simon likes to hurt people’s feelings, he gets a kick out of it. The producers need to talk to him, the program would be a lot nicer if all the judges were at least kind to the talent, they wouldn’t have gotten that far if they deidn’t hav talent and their hearts and sould are in it so be nice!

T October 16th, 2007

I love Paula! Can’t wait till next season!

Myriah October 16th, 2007

Cassie,

Why don’t you google Mr. Cowell and see what he really knows about music. Lord knows it is a helluva lot more than you do!!
