As controversy continues to surround Ellen DeGeneres, the comedian is doing what she know best: making audiences laugh—this time during her primetime special, Ellen’s Really Big Show. Filmed last Thursday at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, DeGeneres’s much-hyped TBS special airs tonight (at 9 p.m. ET, with an encore performance at 10:30 p.m. ET).
The special recalls the variety shows of yore that DeGeneres grew up on. “I liked all weird acts. I liked the plate spinners, the quick-change artists the things you normally don’t see unless you go to Vegas,” DeGeneres said during a recent interview to promote her special. And the special will indeed feature quick-change artists David & Dania (seen in the accompanying video), as well as a jump-roping team, a children’s choir and special performances by Mary J. Blige and Sheryl Crow.
“Game shows are hugely popular again on primetime, which they used to be,” DeGeneres said of wanting to do the same for the variety genre.. I really think people are ready to see a primetime variety show, and I’m going to go out on a limb and say people are gonna want to wear mullets again.” —Caryn Midler
