Was it the dramatic cliffhanger or its star’s real life teen pregnancy drama that gave the finale of Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101 a major ratings boost?
Either way, 7.3 million viewers tuned in to watch Jamie Lynn Spears in the season finale of Zoey 101 on Friday — that’s more than double the show’s usual audience, reports the New York Post.
So what’s next for the hit show? A source told PEOPLE that Spears’s contract with Nickelodeon ended when she completed filming Zoey 101 in August, and that the 16-year-old was not expected to promote the fourth and final season, which begins airing in February.
In late November, before she announced she’s expecting a baby, Spears, 16, spoke to the Associated Press about life after Zoey. “I’m going to try to graduate before I do anything else,” she said in the interview.
She also suggested college — at Louisiana State University — might be an option. “I haven’t thought anything about what I might study,” she said. “I’ll have to look more into that. But if I went anywhere, I think it would be fun to go to LSU.”
And although she announced in December that she’s pregnant, those plans may still be in place.
The same day that Zoey 101 got its ratings spike, Spears was photographed carrying a GED study book in Hammond, La. outside of a building that houses the Tangipahoa Parish School System Adult Education Center (a GED prep site) and the Title I Parent Center, which teaches parents how to help their children learn reading skills. –Brian Orloff
