Idol’s David Hernandez: ‘The Media Can Be Vicious’

March 13, 2008

David Hernandez doesn’t believe reports that he used to dance nude at a gay bar in Phoenix had anything to do with his elimination from American Idol.

“I actually believe that it was based on song selection. I think America’s smart enough to know by now that people’s personal lives should not influence their musical career,” said Hernandez, whose rendition of “I Saw Her Standing There” got poor reviews from the Idol judges Tuesday night.

“I actually watched my performance back from Tuesday night and I was very happy with my stage presence,” said Hernandez, who spoke to reporters in a conference call. “I did a pretty good job of blocking it all out.”

Hernandez also said he had the support of fellow contestants who encouraged him not to go online or turn the TV when the reports about him were at their peak. “The media can be vicious sometimes,” he said.

In fact, any negative coverage of his past only made him stronger. “Adversity is my best friend,” Hernandez said. “It makes me work harder and I don’t have anything to say to the people that try to bring me down or count me out.”

“In this industry you really have to have thick skin and know that people are going to say bad things about you,” he added.

And Hernandez, who is currently shopping for a record deal and preparing to make the media rounds on shows like The Ellen DeGeneres and Today, expects to continue working in the industry — despite being the first contestant to get cut from the top 12.

“If this is the worst thing that comes out of my career then I’m pretty set to go.” –Alondra Hernandez

I am sooo glad he is gone. I heard he worked in a gay stripping bar. He turned around to hug Sheshya to say good bye. Then the called his name. He was like… WHAT?

Lita March 13th, 2008

You people leave David Hernandez alone. if you guy jealouse because you had nothing to show off. He is a good singer. He will be a succesful actor.

Rachel March 13th, 2008

Everyone heard that he worked at a gay stripping bar… so what??? That doesn’t make him any less talented or deserving to be a part of the Idol train… David, you went WELL before your time, and I wish you the best of luck!!!

Kerri March 13th, 2008

David sucked. So glad that he is gone! It was funny he didnt think he was going anywhere. And I do think his taking his clothes off for men influenced peoples decisions. He still wasn’t the best singer.

Ginger March 13th, 2008

I could care less about his personal life as far as the “stripping” thing goes. He is a talented singer, but not at all the best talent in the competition. Whether he went first or not, he is not the most talented of the 12, and not the next American Idol.

Tanya McCarthy March 13th, 2008

I agree, who cares where he worked before and what he did. He got further than tens of thousands of others, and I hope he is sucessful in whatever he does going forward.
Before one criticizes and casts stones, look at yourself first in the mirror. If you’re not perfect, shut up!

Love March 13th, 2008

It takes alot of courage to be on stage….He can stripped for me anyday.

Chris March 13th, 2008

Those people that said David could not sing, what about the Kristy Lee Cook who BUTCHERED her song, so much for this year being a talent show. looks like popularity will dominate again this year!

Donna W March 13th, 2008

I think Kristy Lee Cook should’ve gone, but I do believe that David was the weakest vocalist of the men. He was never gonna make it too much further. The stripping thing probably didn’t help his perception to the public, though.

At least he didnt try to let the world know like Danny did. Go Michael Johns.
