Man vs. Wild Star Apologizes for Staged Show

March 20, 2008

From wild to mild!

Man vs. Wild star Bear Grylls has apologized for staging aspects of his hit survivalist show. For the series, the British-born Grylls was supposedly abandoned in the wild and left to fend for himself. But a program consultant revealed last year that, during one Hawaii shoot, he stayed in a motel.

“If people felt misled on how the first series was represented, I’m really sorry for that,” Grylls, 33, told the BBC. “I’m the one who takes the rap for these things, even though I’m not always involved in the editing side of it.”

Reality is “much less exciting” than the version presented on screen, Grylls, whose show is known as Born Survivor in the U.K., admitted.

And the hotels? Grylls insisted he was still roughing it. “The hotel [can be] four walls but not a roof, or a roof with no walls,” he maintained.

The Discovery Channel admitted “isolated elements” were not “natural to the environment,” and promised greater clarity in future. –Caris Davis

Shocker March 20th, 2008

HA - I knew he was a fake a year ago! He was wearing a life jacket under his sweatshirt and trying to tell people that you can use your backpack to float down a raging river - Yeah, with a life jacket on underneath! Go Les Stroud!

Sarah March 20th, 2008

awwww! i really used 2 like that show, now i don’t think i could ever watch it again without thinking to myself that he’s bein pampered in a Hilton suite somewhere! :(

Lala March 20th, 2008

I wonder if he was really drinking his urine then…I don’t care if he’s a fake or not! He’s stil hot!

Musketloader March 20th, 2008

Why should he put his life in danger educating the public. There have been several incidents where lives have been save because someone learned a lesson from this show. It seem stupid that we would actually ask someone to put their life in danger just to entertain people.

Sara March 20th, 2008

There is nothing wrong with what he did.So he didnt stay one night out in the jungle who cares. Its what he did thats so impressive and if you think he’s such a bad guy why not bite your tongue and stop always fanning the fire. If one of ya is perfect and can do a better job then he has go on speak up and tell us what you did thats makes you have the right to judge this man.

L. March 20th, 2008

dude, he’s hot…guys and girls think he’s hot. All television has fake or modified aspects. If he were butt ugly he wouldn’t have the same fan base that he does now.

DANELLE March 20th, 2008

I think the Television producers are more to blame for the misleading information than he is. Like he said, he doesn’t always have control over the editing process. I think he still does an incredible job educating people on how to survive in the wild.

Matt March 20th, 2008

‘Survivorman’ is a much more realistic/informative show. Man up, Discovery — grill the Bear and bring back Les!

Kim March 20th, 2008

would you stay out in the wild? i wouldnt….but it was wrong making ppl think that he really stayed out there

Bondgirl73 March 20th, 2008

It might have been slightly misleading to some, nonetheless, he is still an incredible man, very very educated,a fabulous presenter, great wit and his show sells.I’ll always keep watching it.The other show “survivorman” is more the “real deal” - Les Shroud is good too, but I don’t think he has the presence Bear has.I’m sure he genuinely feels terrible to his fans, but he hasn’t lost this one!!
