Idol: David Cook’s ‘Brave’ Performance

March 26, 2008

Tuesday’s Idol featured the top 10 contestants performing songs from the year they were born. And not a single contestant — maybe because they are too young? — sang anything by the Beatles.

David Cook, born in 1982, finished out the night with a stunning performance of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” Cook slowed it down, rocked it out and created an entirely new vibe for a very familiar song.

Randy Jackson called it “original,” “bold” and “molten hot.” Paula Abdul was “blown away” and Simon Cowell, acknowledging the risk of changing the song so much, remarked on Cook’s bravery and called the performance “amazing.”

Earlier, Kristy Lee Cook finally had a good night. Born in 1984, the other Cook sang “God Bless the U.S.A.,” adding her familiar country twang. The judges liked it and praised her for picking a “poignant” and “respectful” song. Cowell called it the “most clever” song choice he’d heard in years.

The judges also seemed to like David Archuleta but only Cowell seemed to recognize his song (He sang “You’re the Voice” by John Farnham). They didn’t quite get Carly Smithson even though she mastered “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” but they loved Michael Johns, who combined two Queen songs, opening with “We Will Rock You” and finishing up with “We Are the Champions.”

But David Cook definitely owned the night. Randy called him “the most original, the most bold contestant we’ve ever had” and suggested he “might be the one to win the whole lot.”

Could he be right?

Tell us: Did you love David Cook’s rock ‘n’ roll version of “Billie Jean?”

They actually said at the beginning before he sang that he was going to sing the Chris Cornell version. He bowed because he was acknowledging the audience’s aplause, not what “Amanda” thinks as him believing that he sang it like it was his own.

HE WAS AWESOME, and IS AWESOME with whatever version of any song he sings.

I thought he was great, but the judges personally need to apologize to David and all the viewers for not realizing, that David did not come up with this version himself. They pretty much never heard the song performed this way. Yet, it was realeased in the spring 2007 by Audio Slave. The judges gushing with praise calling it original and inventive. Before everyone jumps on the bandwagon and starts saying everyone was doing cover songs. Think about it this way. A lot of people were a bit ticked that these comments were made by the judges. Its time for the judges to get out of their little bubbles, and experience more music then the top 40. Thanks to their goof, it cost David votes.

AWESOME!

David was smoking hot and did an awesome version of this Michael Jackson song. He is a very good performer and should win this competition.
Note: He didn’t pretend that this was ‘his’ version of this song and Ryan did not introduce it as such.

OMG!!! the second he started the song i got a little smile on my face and a little jump in my chest - i just KNEW it was going to be good!! and he didn’t disappoint. that was the single, most fantastically amazing performance IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN IDOL!!!! i absolutely loved it - that man shouldn’t even be on the show - he should be in a recording studio. i can’t wait to buy his first album.

Amanda: Did you not hear Ryan when he said “Performing Chris COrnell’s version of Billie jean.. David Cook?” He did not try to steal Chris Cornell’s version, so get over yourself.

GO MICHAEL JOHNS!!

I can honestly say I never really understood why David Cook was still on the show, but that performance last night of Billie Jean made me rethink my preconceived notions. I thought his performance was really good and I can now see him winning the whole thing. I just jumped on the David cook bandwagon after last nights performance!

I absolutely loved it……this is our new American idol!!!!

Rhonda March 26th, 2008

David Cook may not be the next American Idol (re:Taylor Hicks), but he will be the next American superstar (re:Chris Daughtry).

Jeska March 26th, 2008

David Cook was unbelievavle. AND the fact that the song was already recorded in that version should not matter at all. Everyone up there is singing someone elses song. He rocked that song and his stage performance is wonderful. I hope he goes all the way.
