JabbaWockeeZ: America’s Best Dance Crew!

March 28, 2008

After 38 million votes were cast, Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew crowned its first winners Thursday night when the JabbaWockeeZ, a crew from San Diego, Calif., beat out the East Coast-based Status Quo to take home the $100,000 prize and bragging rights as the best dance crew in the country.

The show featured a total of 12 street and studio dance crews from across the nation. Each week the crews were given a specific task and had to prepare choreography to show their particular dance skills on stage as they battle it out to win over viewers.

JabbaWockeeZ dance crew member Ben Chung, 26, says the show is finally giving a voice to a part of the hip hop culture that hasn’t necessarily been acknowledged in the mainstream. And although there have been other dance shows, Chung says, “This is the first show that has been able to showcase dance crews.”

Not even the judges on the show could have expected the huge response the show has received. “You never know what to expect when you start something from the ground up,” says JC Chasez, one of three judges on the show. “You can hope for the best.”

“It’s just like anything,” adds Shane Sparks, who also served as judge. “It’s always just dormant. It’s just sitting there waiting for someone to spark it.”

And spark it they have. The show has been green lighted for another season. Chasez along with Sparks and rapper Lil Mama will all return as judges for another two of America’s Best Dance Crew. Auditions begin in April.

As for JabbaWockeeZ, they currently have various offers for commercial work and say they would love the opportunity to tour as dancers with artists such as Chris Brown and Usher. –Alondra Hernandez
