Elliott Yamin’s Mom Dies at Age 65

The mother of former American Idol star Elliott Yamin has died, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

Claudette Yamin passed away on Monday night at the age of 65.

The cause of death has not been released; however, she was hospitalized over the weekend, the paper reports.

Yamin, 29, was the third runner-up on the fifth season of American Idol.

A message posted on Yamin’s Web site Monday by friend Brandon Crowe is titled: “May She Rest in Peace.”

It reads: “The world lost a beautiful soul. I can’t go into any details at this time except to say that she went peacefully. Elliott wanted me to let you all know, but we are asking that you please respect the family’s privacy at this time. We are all aware of your prayers, and we thank you. In lieu of sending flowers, we ask that donations be sent to the local chapter of the Richmond JDRF. Thanks again for all your support and prayers … it’s helped us through the day.”

A funeral service is planned for Wednesday in Richmond, Va., according to
the Times-Dispatch.

She seemed very sweet and supportive. I can picture her cheering for Elliot in the AI audience right now, and I remember hearing that she was staying on friends’ couches in California just to be able to attend the shows and support him. What a lady.

To me, she was the only memorable parent, from American Idol ever! She showed, such joy and pride for her son. She was amazed right along with us, watching Elliott singing from is soul, and growing right before our eyes. She gave birth, to a “star in the making”! She did not know Elliott could sing, until a short time before he tried out for American Idol. That is why, she was an absolute joy to watch, when he would sing! Pure pride & awe. I always have admired Elliott’s talent and class but also his deep love for his mother. I hope he finds comfort knowing how proud she was of him and what a blessing it is that she lived long enough to see his success. I remember she battled ill health during his “season” and she certainly died too young — but then again, it’s always too soon to lose a loved one, no matter how old they are. What sad news. Being from Richmond we all attended his homecoming they taped for the show when he sang the National Anthem at a baseball game. Right before his performance, there was a parade down the streets of Richmond and his mom was riding in the car with him, just sobbing while watching all the people cheer for him and chant his name. I have never seen someone so proud, it was very touching. She will be missed.

I met Elliott when he performed in Detroit and asked “how is your momma?” “She’s good. Thanks for asking,” he answered. Elliott is a reflection of his mother - a truly kind-hearted soul. It was apparent that she loved ALL of her children - equally. Elliott just happens to be in the limelight and we were only able to witness the love that they had for each other. But if you are able to witness it with one child, then you know it is the same love for all the children. My heart goes out to the Yamin Family and Friends.
