Idol Shocker! Michael Johns Eliminated

April 11, 2008

It’s the end of the road for American Idol’s Michael Johns.

The Australian singer, who performed Aerosmith’s “Dream On” earlier this week, and was thrilled to participate in Idol Gives Back the following night, was sent packing in a surprising elimination Thursday.

Joined in the bottom three by Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson, Johns looked shocked when host Ryan Seacrest announced that both women were safe.

“That means Michael has the lowest number of votes this week,” Seacrest said. “Last year, during Idol Gives Back, we didn’t eliminate anybody at this stage of the competition. Tonight, we’re going to say goodbye to Michael Johns.”

As Johns hugged Mercado and Smithson, shook Seacrest’s hand and came to terms with America’s decision, the crowd in the Idol auditorium rose to their feet and erupted in boos and shouts of disapproval.

“I am definitely surprised,” Johns said. “I enjoyed singing that song.”

It’s no wonder he was surprised. Although Randy Jackson said his version of “Dream On” “had some pitch problems,” Paula Abdul said he was “unbelievable” and sounded “as good as you look.” Simon Cowell called it a “very good performance.” Also, Johns had never been in the bottom three.

As he sang his swan song, the other contestants stood and clapped for their fellow Idol. Johns moved from the stage to the platform behind the judges to be closer to the audience. And in the final moments of the live broadcast, Johns was hugging the judges.

There’s no telling what was said between them at that point, but earlier, Cowell said, “I’m going to miss you. You’re a very good singer and a very, very nice guy.”

Tell us: Did America make the right decision in eliminating Michael Johns?

No Way!! Definately not the right decision! This was almost on the same level of shocking as Chris Daughtry’s elimination two seasons ago. Kristy Lee Cook absolutely should have been sent home! Very upsetting…

LeAnne April 11th, 2008

I am surprised to see him go, however, Dream On is not a very inspirational song. It just goes to show that votes count!

Angel April 11th, 2008

This doesn’t make sense to me! If you have a favourite, wouldn’t you just vote for the same one every week, even if he/she has one bad performance?!? Michael Johns should not have been voted off!!!! His performance wasn’t even that bad! At least he sings songs that people have heard of and that actually used to be big hits!! What’s wrong with Americans, why you so picky??!!??!!

Brenda April 11th, 2008

That black chic and Kristy Lee should have been sent home instead of Michael Johns.

Guess they gotta make sure the show is racially correct…….Bunch of BS if you ask me!

And they wonder why ratings are down. DUH!!!!

MICHAEL JOHNS WILL HAVE THE LAST LAUGH THOUGH…HE WILL BE BIG LIKE DAUGHTRY!!!!!

Maria April 11th, 2008

Michael Johns will do very well just like Daughtry. VERY shocked he got voted off.

Jumper April 11th, 2008

I can’t believe he got voted off! He was such a good singer…and kristy lee NEEDS to go home! She is not good, and I don’t think she would ever be a good Amerian idol

Lisa April 11th, 2008

I voted for Michael, several times even though my favorite is David Cook. I thought it was the right choice for the bottom 2 with Syesha and Carly so Michael came as a shock to me. I wouldnt mind buying his CD if he came out with one. Go Michael, we’re wanting to see you become a huge star as you should!

Erin April 11th, 2008

It should have been Kristy Lee Cook!!!

Jen April 11th, 2008

To Brenda,
That was the most racist statement! That was disgusting. Her name is Syesha Mercado and she is beautiful. You’ve got some evolving to do…get to work.

Katrina April 11th, 2008

I too was shocked by the elimination, but leave it to someone (BRENDA) to bring race into it.Could it just be that…hmmm..just maybe…his fans didn’t vote enough for him??

Don’t be ignorant and bring race into this - and that “black chick” has a name - and it’s obvious you have a problem with her.

Grow up - it’s freaking American Idol!

- Katrina M. - a “black chick” - out!
