Idol Shocker! Michael Johns Eliminated

April 11, 2008

It’s the end of the road for American Idol’s Michael Johns.

The Australian singer, who performed Aerosmith’s “Dream On” earlier this week, and was thrilled to participate in Idol Gives Back the following night, was sent packing in a surprising elimination Thursday.

Joined in the bottom three by Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson, Johns looked shocked when host Ryan Seacrest announced that both women were safe.

“That means Michael has the lowest number of votes this week,” Seacrest said. “Last year, during Idol Gives Back, we didn’t eliminate anybody at this stage of the competition. Tonight, we’re going to say goodbye to Michael Johns.”

As Johns hugged Mercado and Smithson, shook Seacrest’s hand and came to terms with America’s decision, the crowd in the Idol auditorium rose to their feet and erupted in boos and shouts of disapproval.

“I am definitely surprised,” Johns said. “I enjoyed singing that song.”

It’s no wonder he was surprised. Although Randy Jackson said his version of “Dream On” “had some pitch problems,” Paula Abdul said he was “unbelievable” and sounded “as good as you look.” Simon Cowell called it a “very good performance.” Also, Johns had never been in the bottom three.

As he sang his swan song, the other contestants stood and clapped for their fellow Idol. Johns moved from the stage to the platform behind the judges to be closer to the audience. And in the final moments of the live broadcast, Johns was hugging the judges.

There’s no telling what was said between them at that point, but earlier, Cowell said, “I’m going to miss you. You’re a very good singer and a very, very nice guy.”

Tell us: Did America make the right decision in eliminating Michael Johns?

Take our poll on the most shocking eliminations in Idol history.

Oh, and yes, I’m done watching Idol. This spoiled it for me. Great singer eliminated, poor singers go ON and ON. The point of the show is….?

I think Michael is pretty boring and I wasnt surprised by the results at all. Kristy Lee has been my vote to go home in the past but she has improved tremendously since she hasnt had to sing Beatles anymore. Besides, this is AMERICAN Idol, and it kinda bothers me that Michael and Carly are not American

Ryan Seacrest is a dolt. What was the point of him commenting that last year no one was eliminated during Idol Give Back week - and then proceed to announce Johns was going home? I don’t get it.

Susan April 11th, 2008

Shocked, yes. In my humble opinion Ryan Seacrest is the one who should go! What was with pouring vinegar over the wound, so to speak? “Last year after Idol Gives Back, we did not eliminate anybody.” I for one thing Brook should have been the one…enjoyed her early on but she has not progressed…

Can you say “Daughtry”??!!?? Michael Johns was my favorite as was Daughtry. Getting voted off could turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to him!!! This show is a popularity contest not a singing contest. It should be more about who can sing and who can sustain a career as a music star.

Bobbie April 11th, 2008

This obviously is not a “talent” contest. Michael Johns definitely should not have gone. Every professional has their bad days. But some of those that are still left, should have been gone a long, long, time ago. Michael will be just as successful as Daughtry is. I will definitely buy his music.

Sorry, in earlier post I meant Michael Johns, not David Johns. Thanks for not blasting me about it.

And I agree with JoAnne. Jason Castro is a cutie but a silly waste of space. If we just wanted eye-candy we could have kept the gay male stripper!

I do believe America got it right. At this point, they are ALL fantastic singers. Simon has it right when he says it is now about picking the right song. Michael Johns was doing the same thing over and over and was becoming boring even though he was still very good. I think the same goes for David A. He is so cute but kind of boring too, no surprise ever. I think the top 4 should be David C. ( the best) then Jason ( so original), and Syesha and Kathy.

American got it wrong again, Ryan was very rude saying Idol did not send anyone packing this week last year and then to say you are going. Shame on Idol and shame on you Ryan for saying that. This was supposed to be Idol’s great week. Idol gives back, you certainly did not give Micheal John’s anything back. You should not have sent anyone home and you still have people there who are hopeless, Michael John’s should have at least got to the last 3 or 4th. I had trouble texting my vote so maybe AT&T had a problem.

It doesn’t matter what season it is, American Idol does the same thing every year and that’s have the worst person win the competiton. Don’t get me wrong, Carrie & Kelly are good but they are the exception. There never seems to be a “rocker” win. Who wants to hear this “pop tart” music? Not me. Daughtry got robbed and so did Michael. I hope he makes something of this experience and goes far. He truly deserves it.
