Idol Shocker! Michael Johns Eliminated

April 11, 2008

It’s the end of the road for American Idol’s Michael Johns.

The Australian singer, who performed Aerosmith’s “Dream On” earlier this week, and was thrilled to participate in Idol Gives Back the following night, was sent packing in a surprising elimination Thursday.

Joined in the bottom three by Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson, Johns looked shocked when host Ryan Seacrest announced that both women were safe.

“That means Michael has the lowest number of votes this week,” Seacrest said. “Last year, during Idol Gives Back, we didn’t eliminate anybody at this stage of the competition. Tonight, we’re going to say goodbye to Michael Johns.”

As Johns hugged Mercado and Smithson, shook Seacrest’s hand and came to terms with America’s decision, the crowd in the Idol auditorium rose to their feet and erupted in boos and shouts of disapproval.

“I am definitely surprised,” Johns said. “I enjoyed singing that song.”

It’s no wonder he was surprised. Although Randy Jackson said his version of “Dream On” “had some pitch problems,” Paula Abdul said he was “unbelievable” and sounded “as good as you look.” Simon Cowell called it a “very good performance.” Also, Johns had never been in the bottom three.

As he sang his swan song, the other contestants stood and clapped for their fellow Idol. Johns moved from the stage to the platform behind the judges to be closer to the audience. And in the final moments of the live broadcast, Johns was hugging the judges.

There’s no telling what was said between them at that point, but earlier, Cowell said, “I’m going to miss you. You’re a very good singer and a very, very nice guy.”

Tell us: Did America make the right decision in eliminating Michael Johns?

Take our poll on the most shocking eliminations in Idol history.

It should have been one of the ladies in the bottom 3 - they were both horrible

A shocker, he has made a few bad song choices but not this week. I feel he definitely has the talent and looks to be in the top 5. But, as we’ve seen with Daughtry, this does not mean he won’t necessarily have a good career ahead of him. I think a record label will pick him up, we’ll be seeing more of him.

I know that someone has to go home each week. However, it was way too soon for Michael to go home! I’m sorry, but there are a couple of other singers still in the competition that should have been gone weeks ago! I also think it was VERY RUDE of Ryan to tease Michael about how last year they didn’t send anyone home, but…..Michael was leaving them. It seems that Ryan gets his jollies torturing the contestants.

I’m so sorry to see Michael Johns go! He was my favorite from the beginning. Sounds way better than Archuleta, Cook, or Smithson -and definitely better than the rest. Syesha should have been the one to go. She screams when she sings. Not a fan of that. But, maybe this is for the best. Now Michael can go out there and get his career going. I KNOW he’s going to make it big!

Oh my god!! This is so shocking! I could almost feel myself crying at this news.I mean, he is so good. How could it be possible that he never gets into the bottom three any week, and yet after a single performance, POOF! he’s gone. There is a mistake. There’s definitely something wrong. Get the other two who were with him off the show. He at least sang the regular rock anthems everybody loves. And people know them too, so you don’t find yourself sleeping when you’re watching them like it’s with the other contestants (Dave Cook excluded). SACRILEGE! I am rooting for Dave now. He’s the only decent one left. And I hope Mike the best for his future.

Brooke White needs to be voted off,she is about as exciting as a bag of rocks…………..boring

Shame on Ryan Seacrest for commenting “last year we did not send anyone home” after the Idol Gives Back show and then telling him not true this year. Way to get his hopes up for a brief second and then slam him down again. That was horrible!!!

I think Carly needs to go. She appears as if she thinks she is “it”. And she most definitely is not as good as she seems to think she is. She won’t sell many records. Michael Johns is much more American Idol material.

Manda April 11th, 2008

I was sooo shocked. he didnt do bad at all, and I’ve always thought he was good. I don’t even think he belonged in the bottom three:(

michael i thought deserved this chance. he was good and shouldn’t have been eliminated. i would buy his cd if it came out.
