Idol Shocker! Michael Johns Eliminated

April 11, 2008

It’s the end of the road for American Idol’s Michael Johns.

The Australian singer, who performed Aerosmith’s “Dream On” earlier this week, and was thrilled to participate in Idol Gives Back the following night, was sent packing in a surprising elimination Thursday.

Joined in the bottom three by Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson, Johns looked shocked when host Ryan Seacrest announced that both women were safe.

“That means Michael has the lowest number of votes this week,” Seacrest said. “Last year, during Idol Gives Back, we didn’t eliminate anybody at this stage of the competition. Tonight, we’re going to say goodbye to Michael Johns.”

As Johns hugged Mercado and Smithson, shook Seacrest’s hand and came to terms with America’s decision, the crowd in the Idol auditorium rose to their feet and erupted in boos and shouts of disapproval.

“I am definitely surprised,” Johns said. “I enjoyed singing that song.”

It’s no wonder he was surprised. Although Randy Jackson said his version of “Dream On” “had some pitch problems,” Paula Abdul said he was “unbelievable” and sounded “as good as you look.” Simon Cowell called it a “very good performance.” Also, Johns had never been in the bottom three.

As he sang his swan song, the other contestants stood and clapped for their fellow Idol. Johns moved from the stage to the platform behind the judges to be closer to the audience. And in the final moments of the live broadcast, Johns was hugging the judges.

There’s no telling what was said between them at that point, but earlier, Cowell said, “I’m going to miss you. You’re a very good singer and a very, very nice guy.”

Tell us: Did America make the right decision in eliminating Michael Johns?

Take our poll on the most shocking eliminations in Idol history.

black chick to funny wasnt it 3 out of 4 black chicks in the final 4 last year.here is how it works.Ramiele got the boot her votes were not
rocker votes so with 3 rockers left 1 had to go.
I would think Ramiele’s votes went to kristy,
brooke and david A.fan base counts think about
this Syesha Mercado is the only african american
left and Kristy Lee Cook is the only country singer left.Don’t be to shocked again next week

I thought you were supposed to vote on the “overall” performances, not just the past one??? He is much better than most of the ones left that have continually performed badly, and never been in the bottom, so why all of a sudden, totally makes no sense, makes you not even want to bother watching anymore. Something is strange. There are people still on that cannot even dance, have you noticed? Brooke and David A. and Jason, isn’t that too, part of performing, what they will always just sit behind an instrument? Oh well, probably won’t watch anymore, Michael and Carly and David Cook are the talents this year, and since no one likes Carly, whom has a wonderful voice, it’s amazing, it’s fixed or too many predjudice idiots voting.

Seriously…it’s reality tv….how many people can all of you even name from…I don’t know…season 3? I’m not trash talking by any means, but come on…it’s a show that you basicly get emotionally wrapped up in and vote vote vote…all to see who is going to be the next big cruise ship singer…Daughtry is awesome, Clarkson has done well for herself, and then there’s that country singer girl….but where’s the
“SOUL PATROL”? or Those two goofballs that won the second season?…doing nothing. As a musician, I think American Idol is a cheap way to get recognition. So many fantastic musicians are out there struggling for a shot, while these kids are singing once a week and people are voting on them? the bottom line is: ITS JUST A SHOW. DONT SHED ANY MORE SISSY TEARS!

I agree it was a surprise, but it’s a popularity contest and this season there are so many talented guys. I have no doubt, that Michael will make it in the music business, as I refuse to think that the last we have seen of him.
Good luck and God bless!

Good Day,

Incredible, if you are a music lover, this is the biggest mistake so far on American Idol! I don’t understand the voting, since the american public tends to keep the same over and over the years! The best leave most of the time, remember “Daughtry”!!! Hope Michael will have the opportunity to continue in the business since he has everything to do so!!!
THE BEST FOR YOU MICHAEL JOHNS!!!!

Others should have def been in the bottome 3 before this guy. But maybe when America thinks the person is safe, is when they need to vote for them.

Pam April 11th, 2008

Each week, from now on, will be shocking. The quality of talent this year has been amazing and now the best of the best will be eliminated until we reach the “ido” for 2008. That being said, there were at least a few who should have been eliminated before Michael. I believe he will rise above it, as did Chris Daughtry. We’ll hear from him again! Good luck and God Bless Michael!

Oy April 11th, 2008

Maybe people didn’t think anyone was going to be eliminated this week. But what Ryan did was despicable. I don’t think he would have made it to the top two. But there are definetely people who should have left before him.

Lisa April 11th, 2008

Brenda you just sock!
Syesha is great, she has a beautiful voice, I don’t understand why she has been on the bottom three so many times when she is one of the best along with David Cook, she sounds like an angel when she sang I will always love you. She is one of the best.
Michael…..I dont’t think he was good enough, but I’m agrree that Kristy Lee should have been sent home long time ago.
