David Cook’s Ailing Brother Attends Tearful Performance

April 15, 2008

In a heart-wrenching American Idol performance, David Cook sang “Always Be My Baby” on Tuesday night while his brother Adam Cook, who is battling brain cancer, watched from the front row.

When David finished the Mariah Carey song, Adam gave him a standing ovation and David wiped his eyes.

“You have tears,” host Ryan Seacrest said after giving the audience the number to vote. “He’s in tears right now.”

David could only answer, “Yeah.”

During a commercial break, David walked down to hug his brother in his seat. All three judges — Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson — also hugged Adam.

Adam, 36, who traveled to Los Angeles from his home state of Indiana, arrived at the studio 40 minutes before the live telecast began and took a seat right next to Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher and her daughter.

Two weeks ago David had a difficult time concentrating on the show because he had learned his brother’s condition had worsened. Despite his fragile state, Adam’s doctors allowed him to travel to the Idol show accompanied by a medic and a nurse.

“His brother came to town a few days ago, and he’s not in the best of shape and you can tell it’s affecting David and everything,” says dancer Lacey Schwimmer, of So You Think You Can Dance, who has stepped out with David recently. “But I think it’s a good thing that he’s here because it shows that his brother is still supporting him.”

Schwimmer adds: “He’s just really happy his brother is here.”

Adam is expected to attend Wednesday night’s Idol results show before returning to Indiana on Thursday. –Jed Dreben and Monica Rizzo

I thought David’s performance was absolutely amazing! It was so unique and to see him look at his brother at the end was just the end to a perfect performance. I hope David wins American Idol!

David’s performance was, once again, incredible. He is amazingly talented and I will be buying his CD. My goes out to him, his brother and family.

Kudos to David. A massive talent & class act all the way. His relationship & love for his brother remained sacred and somewhat private while his voice was the outlet. We are all the better for it. Blessings to you & your family, David!

David is the total package. I absolutely love him!

Amber April 15th, 2008

What an outstanding performance! My prayers are with his family during this time. What a gift to have his brother in the crowd cheering him on. Battling cancer can be an uphill battle, but it is the love and support from family and friends that keeps you fighting. Keep fighting Adam! You are not alone.

David rocks! He was soo good tonight. I’m also surprised he’s with Lacey Schwimmer!

Good luck David! Wonderful to have such supportive and loving family. You will do well!!!

I don’t think that David’s brother’s condition should be a public anouncement. I feel that his condition is being used to draw votes for David and is being used as an excuse for the previous performance that was really bad and cheesy. I feel bad for his brother but this should be kept private. It is being used as a ploy to get sympathy votes. Shame on whoever is pushing this. This is a talent/singing contest and all other affairs should be kept out of the media.
