American Idol

Carly Smithson Leaves American Idol

April 24, 2008

So much for the luck of the Irish — or for that matter, that lucky number seven she tattooed on her finger.

Even though she pleased the judges with her performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Carly Smithson was voted off American Idol on Wednesday.

“Through the competition I’ve been choosing the song that showcases singing ability,” she said of her season seven song choice. “From now forward, I’m going to have fun.” Unfortunately, it just won’t be on Idol.

It was a bit of a shocker that Carly, joined by Syesha Mercado, was in the bottom two. Both singers heard praise from the judges when other contestants fumbled with Lloyd Webber’s songs. Randy Jackson called Jason Castro’s version of “Memory” from Cats a “train wreck,” and Brooke White had to start over her version of “You Must Love Me” from the musical Evita.

Meanwhile, Simon Cowell, who said Carly’s performance was one of his “favorites of the night,” had more encouraging words for the departing singer, telling her, ” I apologize for giving you a compliment, the kiss of death. You can leave with your head held high.”

And she certainly did. “I’m very proud of myself and I’m very happy,” she gushed to the judges after hearing the news. “I’m not upset that I’m going home. I’m okay. I’ve had the best time here. “

That leaves just five contestants in the competition: White, Mercado, Castro and the two Davids — Archuleta and Cook.

I am sorry to see Carly go! I really think she has a wonderful personality and a great voice. I think there was someone else that should have gone in her place, but I know that Carly will continue to be successful.

The fact that Brooke didn’t go home last night makes me throw up in my mouth.

I totally agree that Carly should not have gone home yet! She was a very talented singer with a big voice who could belt a song better than any of the other females. I would say it would have been a bias against the tatoos of her and her husband. I have had a lot of people tell me that was what made them not like her. People have the ability to express themselves however they like, but the voters didn’t agree

Once again America got it wrong as it has many other seasons. And people wonder why the past previous idols have not doen well, because they were supposed to voted long before they were. I loved Carly and felt she deserved to stay whereas Brooke and Jason are not long for this competition. So as far as I am concerned idol has lost me as a viewer. I’m tired of good people being voted off while others who need to go. My only hope is that David Cook wins it because he is the only pure talent that deserves it.

I was shocked to turn on the show last night to see Syesha ans Carly in the bottom 2! Based on the Tuesday’s performances it should have definately been Brooke and Jason in the bottom 2. The teeny boppers kept Jason in and I can’t quite figure out who is keeping in Brooke. They are two of the most one dimensional singers on the show. Carly and the David’s should be the top 3 - she wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) have won but there is no way she should have gone home this early.

We won’t be watching in our house anymore - this competition has to be fixed. It is not a singing competition anymore but a popularity one - I agree with Kathleen’s comments from the earlier post. Slan abhaile Carly - go neireigh an bothair leat!!

I really liked Carly. However, I didn’t realize she at one time worked under Randy Jackson at MCA records when she released an album in 2001. Interesting……..

Unfortunately we Americans were probably too lazy to get off the couch and vote for the best performers and the 12 and 13 year old girls who do vote left us with this horrible decision! Brooke absolutely should have been the one to go home. In what realm are you allowed to stumble over words, change tempos, forget words and still be considered a professional? Her baby faces though probably got the sympathy voters to say.. “Oh poor thing… I need to vote for her… I feel sorry for her for screwing up, that is so embarrassing..” David Cook rocked again…

Brooke or Jason should have been sent home. I am so tired of Brooke’s little pouty facial expressions. She can’t sing either. Jason Castro sounds like a dog in a barrel. It’s a pity that it can’t be a true competition instead of a popularity contest.

Queenie Smith April 24th, 2008

I’m outraged. I thought American Idol was a signing contest. David A and Jason Castro are a disgrace. I think both of these young men look like they are on tranquilizers and anti-depressants. How could two young men remain on the show when clearly the other contestants can sing. What exactly are the voters voting on anyway. Shame on the American public for forgetting the theme of the show — SINGING — Not looking like a cute adolescent. This is beginning to feel like a 2007 PONY HAWK MOMENT!!!
