American Idol

Carly Smithson Leaves American Idol

April 24, 2008

So much for the luck of the Irish — or for that matter, that lucky number seven she tattooed on her finger.

Even though she pleased the judges with her performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Carly Smithson was voted off American Idol on Wednesday.

“Through the competition I’ve been choosing the song that showcases singing ability,” she said of her season seven song choice. “From now forward, I’m going to have fun.” Unfortunately, it just won’t be on Idol.

It was a bit of a shocker that Carly, joined by Syesha Mercado, was in the bottom two. Both singers heard praise from the judges when other contestants fumbled with Lloyd Webber’s songs. Randy Jackson called Jason Castro’s version of “Memory” from Cats a “train wreck,” and Brooke White had to start over her version of “You Must Love Me” from the musical Evita.

Meanwhile, Simon Cowell, who said Carly’s performance was one of his “favorites of the night,” had more encouraging words for the departing singer, telling her, ” I apologize for giving you a compliment, the kiss of death. You can leave with your head held high.”

And she certainly did. “I’m very proud of myself and I’m very happy,” she gushed to the judges after hearing the news. “I’m not upset that I’m going home. I’m okay. I’ve had the best time here. “

That leaves just five contestants in the competition: White, Mercado, Castro and the two Davids — Archuleta and Cook.

I know that we are down to the wire now and someone has to go but seriously folks! Let’s think about this…..Jason Castro knows how to sing one way and one way only, Brooke has messed up several times by forgetting the words and a week or so ago butchered her song, Syesha has not been that great…. and on and on and on. Carly definitely should have outlasted the above. Oh well too late now. Should have been Jason and Brooke in the bottom two with Jason going home. Brooke should go next week. Consistently Mr. Cook has stole the show…he has my vote!

All the Soldiers here in Germany tune in to watch American Idol, and we can’t figure out why Brooke is still there. Carly has the best voice by far and should not have gone home. America got this one wrong!

American Idol has truly gone down hill. The singers are very good this year but we are letting the good ones leave early. Brooke, time to go. Jason, cut the hair and go back to school. If I have to look at David Archuletta squint his eyes one more time. Who truly is going to buy his CD’s. I do not see if selling out shows… David Cook rocks. He is and should be our American Idol this year…..

i was totally shocked with michael johns the other week and now carly - OMG! what are ppl thinking?!!? although this is a great season and no one is horrible, there are 3 other ppl that should of been gone before carly and michael johns too. its just mind boggling….

Have to say that I am not a teeny bopper but a mom of 3 teenage sons and Jason Castro has got to be my all time favorite. (Although I was a bit scared last night) I really like David Cook and he will probably win. David A is a good singer but just too “breathy” for me.

ooopppsss forgot to say something… david cook needs to win. hes AWESOME!! ive liked him from the get-go. we need a different kind of person to win and hes got it all. he ROCKS!

Kelli April 24th, 2008

Obviously, the majority of the voters are teenagers who have the hots for dread boy. He should have been gone a long, long time ago. He has talent, but nowhere near as much as Michael and Carly. I actually find him extremely BORING. Get rid of Brooke too and then maybe we’ll have a “REAL” competition.

Even though I am a David Cooke fan I think America was so wrong!!! I really thought it would be Brooke and Jason in the bottom two…I like them as well but Carly can sing ANYTHING!!! I love Carly and I know this is just the beginning for her. I think Carly definitely was better than Yesha but of course that my opinion as Simon would say. I am a total David Cook fan but I think Carly got a raw deal!!! Carly was by far the best female voice on Idol!

I can’t believe Carly got sent home. America got it wrong 2 weeks in a row. Brooke should have been sent home. Jason did not do too well either.

I’m done with this teeny bopper show. I’m sick of people not realizing this is a VOICE competition. Brooke and Jason will NEVER, EVER sell any records. Get a clue!
