American Idol

Carly Smithson Leaves American Idol

April 24, 2008

So much for the luck of the Irish — or for that matter, that lucky number seven she tattooed on her finger.

Even though she pleased the judges with her performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Carly Smithson was voted off American Idol on Wednesday.

“Through the competition I’ve been choosing the song that showcases singing ability,” she said of her season seven song choice. “From now forward, I’m going to have fun.” Unfortunately, it just won’t be on Idol.

It was a bit of a shocker that Carly, joined by Syesha Mercado, was in the bottom two. Both singers heard praise from the judges when other contestants fumbled with Lloyd Webber’s songs. Randy Jackson called Jason Castro’s version of “Memory” from Cats a “train wreck,” and Brooke White had to start over her version of “You Must Love Me” from the musical Evita.

Meanwhile, Simon Cowell, who said Carly’s performance was one of his “favorites of the night,” had more encouraging words for the departing singer, telling her, ” I apologize for giving you a compliment, the kiss of death. You can leave with your head held high.”

And she certainly did. “I’m very proud of myself and I’m very happy,” she gushed to the judges after hearing the news. “I’m not upset that I’m going home. I’m okay. I’ve had the best time here. “

That leaves just five contestants in the competition: White, Mercado, Castro and the two Davids — Archuleta and Cook.

No Way!! Completely wrong decision, Syesha and Carly were two of the best performances of the night (even though David Cook stole the show AGAIN! :) I am a huge fan of Jason Castro’s, however I believe it should have been he and Brooke in the bottom two with Brooke going home. This just futher proves the idea that American Idol is a popularity contest at times. Jason is going to have to step it up next week if he wants to stay.

Brooke should go…. she’s manipulative with her dramatic faces and her dog eyes. Carly was voted off just because she is not American, same as Michael. America is voting for the wrong reasons; shame on you!

Kevin April 24th, 2008

I thought this was the right choice; however, I would have pegged Carly going home next week, with Syesha going home tonight. Either way, I think America got it right, as they have been getting it right for practically the entire season (excluding Michael Johns). Brooke FTW!

It’s peculiar how Carly has the number 7 tattooed on her hand, and she was the 7th contestant voted off of the Top 12. Just thought I’d point that out.

I cannot believe that she was voted off. Jason should have been the one going home. He is a one dimension singer and he really is not that good. Carly has a strong voice and can sing anything. America really got it wrong last night!! Carly when you do get that album deal I will be one of the first in line to but it! Good Luck!!

Didn’t like Carly, however, Brooke should have been the one going home Wednesday night. Hopefully next week.

sandra April 24th, 2008

sandra; I can’t believe she was voted off-she has an amazing voice and is much better than Brooke who for some reason is still there…Lets hope this is Brooke’s last week.

I cannot believe they did it again. After Michael Johns, now Carly Smithson… Brooke White is the one suppose to go out. It is very very obvious. I am not sure how many phone her fans have to make her stay in this competition :(. Yes, I do love to see Syesha go as well, but tonite suppose to be Brooke White turn and next week should be Syesha turn……

Carly is so brilliant, but maybe thats cos im biased! She shud not have gone home. this contest was supposed to be about talent. That Brooke one should’ve gone home a long time ago. for her to have to start her song again is so unprofessional. she is crap!

han April 24th, 2008

no way american did not do the right thing….. am i the only one saying this NO! everyone think that brook is suppose to be the one who got illiminated she keeps on doing the mistakes all ovr again like starting wrong and stop and re right it again its ok if the first time but for the second time i mean no offense to the fan of brook but lets face it thats the fact….
