American Idol

Carly Smithson Leaves American Idol

April 24, 2008

So much for the luck of the Irish — or for that matter, that lucky number seven she tattooed on her finger.

Even though she pleased the judges with her performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Carly Smithson was voted off American Idol on Wednesday.

“Through the competition I’ve been choosing the song that showcases singing ability,” she said of her season seven song choice. “From now forward, I’m going to have fun.” Unfortunately, it just won’t be on Idol.

It was a bit of a shocker that Carly, joined by Syesha Mercado, was in the bottom two. Both singers heard praise from the judges when other contestants fumbled with Lloyd Webber’s songs. Randy Jackson called Jason Castro’s version of “Memory” from Cats a “train wreck,” and Brooke White had to start over her version of “You Must Love Me” from the musical Evita.

Meanwhile, Simon Cowell, who said Carly’s performance was one of his “favorites of the night,” had more encouraging words for the departing singer, telling her, ” I apologize for giving you a compliment, the kiss of death. You can leave with your head held high.”

And she certainly did. “I’m very proud of myself and I’m very happy,” she gushed to the judges after hearing the news. “I’m not upset that I’m going home. I’m okay. I’ve had the best time here. “

That leaves just five contestants in the competition: White, Mercado, Castro and the two Davids — Archuleta and Cook.

CONFUSED April 24th, 2008

America got it wrong! I think that Jason Castro should have went home, but there are too many teenie boppers who are voting based on “how cute” they think someone is rather than their ability to perform, otherwise Syesia, David Archuleta, Jason and Brooke all would have been sent home by now. I think that the competition is fierce and Brooke better step it up because somehow America sacrificed Carly to save her or Jason. I was really glad that Andrew Lloyd Weber made the point to say that everyone messes up. It is not a crime and should not be punished, but Brooke has got to step it up. I am still rooting for her.

Has it occured to anyone that Carly’s potential audience is voting for David Cook? They have a marginally similar style.

Wahida April 24th, 2008

I’m glad that Carly is voted off.

I hope and think that Brooke will join the 2 davids in the top 3. Brooke got a good voice, she’s good looking and I love her personality.

The next one who will be voted off will be Shayesha or Castro. Sayesha should have gone allready.

Yes, Carly needed to go. Even Andrew Lloyd Webber stopped her and had her change songs during rehearsal. Parts of SUPERSTAR became somewhat of a shouting match. Sir Andrew didn’t what that done with his music from PHANTOM. Yes, she was good during some of the weeks, but her head was starting to become bigger than her tatoos.

Carly, you’ve been my favorite from day one! You and David Cook are, without question, the strongest voices and best talent. I am sad to see you go and I hope that after this “Idol” experience, you won’t go away discouraged. Plenty of people love you and want to keep hearing your beautiful voice!

Heather April 24th, 2008

I am so disappointed in the decision that all of the voters made because it was the wrong choice. Carly is a very good singer and that is what this competion is all about. First it was Michael Johns now its Carly what is wrong with people. They obviously dont know what a good singer is..I just am still blown away with the decision that america has made. People need to vote for the people that can sing not the ones that forget their lyrics or the ones that sing a song that doesnt suit them…I hope that Carly will get her a record deal because if she makes a cd I will be the first to buy it because she is just that good..We love you Carly and loved watching you perform.

how sad!…….she as voted off because she was not born here, plain and simple!….just like Mike from Austraila…..her voice will take her to the top one day….i have no doubt about that!……good luck to u Carly!.Jason and Brook….y they r still there?…anybodies guess!……they’re not bad, but can’t hold a candle to Carly!

You act like this IS ACTUALLY A CONTEST OF ONE’S SINGING TALENT!!!! Of course it is all through auditions. Idol’s got 3 of the biggest names in the business evaluating these kids. They are all very talented and will probably all have their day in the sun after they leave Idol……but it’s now about popularity and all these tweeeny boppers and who actually gets off the sofa and votes for these kids. It’s not about who’s actually more talented or well rounded. It’s obvious in the numbers. Wake up! and just watch it for what it is….sheer entertainment.

Brooke or Jason should have gone home. There’s a part of me that thinks Brooke might be turning in sub-par performances on purpose because she wants to go home. On the other hand, if she’s not doing it on purpose, she’s proving that she doesn’t have the backbone for the business. Funny that someone mentioned that Jason is one-dimensional. I couldn’t agree more, as that’s exactly what I told my husband Tuesday night. I see him as a one-hit wonder. He has a very weak voice and lacks versatility.

I think Carly having the t-shirt at the ready is what did her in. That was a huge turn-off.

Jennifer April 24th, 2008

I agree with Heather. Brooke blew her song and should have been out. I think Carly blows her out of the water, every time she sings. Plus, her personality is much more appealing. I think she freaked out mainstream America with her tatoos and the shots of her family member who has the tatoos all over his face. I’m assuming that is her husband.
