DWTS’ Cristian de la Fuente Injured on Dancefloor

April 28, 2008

Cristian de la Fuente’s samba came to halt Monday night — and the Chilean soap star was sent to the hospital — after suffering a severe muscle cramp in his arm on the Dancing with the Stars dancefloor.

“It hurts,” de la Fuente told cohost Samantha Harris backstage, holding an ice pack to his left forearm. “It hurts the arm and it hurts that I couldn’t do it, you know, it’s tough.”

Still, he put on a strong showing. Seconds after hurting himself, the actor faced the judges, insisting “I’m fine,” and clutched his arm in obvious pain before going to commercial break. During the dance he had tried to shake off the injury, but he pulled back from lifting his pro partner Cheryl Burke off the floor.

“When we were dancing I fell back into his arms and I heard something crack,” Burke told PEOPLE between tears after the show. “I am so worried. He is not a wuss. He tried to finish the dance.”

The EMT on site diagnosed a “severe muscle cramp,” cohost Tom Bergeron told the audience.

Meanwhile, the judges, who gave the couple straight 7’s (21/30) for their performance, had encouraging words. “I really appreciate you went the whole round and you were there for Cheryl,” judge Carrie Ann Inaba said, while Bruno Tonioli told him: “I hope you’re coming back because you are a great performer.” –with reporting by Monica Rizzo

Suck it up , be a man. Switch hands and carry on. The look on your face when interviewed backstage. Learn to smile with pain. Bite a lip. Suck it up. BE a MAN…

I was really sad to see him injured and hope that his injury won’t keep him from being able to continue competing if he is not voted off. I am not entirely sure that he will be voted off. I know the judges said they’d judge up to the point of the injury and not hold that against them, but they had finished at least 2/3 of the dance before anything looked really wrong, and while it wasn’t a dance worthy of 10’s, I think had they completed the dance as planned without the injury, it would have been 8’s for them. My guess would be Christian and Mario in the bottom two this week, and Christian is likely to have a higher percentage of the fan votes.

I was also sorry that Marissa danced first because I thought her tango deserved 10’s and I think if she’d danced later in the competition, she might have gotten them, you know how the judges tend to hold back with the first person to leave room for everyone else.

Def Leppard tonight, WOO HOO!

i felt really bad but couldnt pin point when it was he hurt it because if you re-watch his dance..he wasn’t extending his arm to start with… but i do feel bad and wish him well quickly.

Hope that Cristian feels better soon — think that they make a great dancing couple.

IT IS TOO BAD THAT THIS HAPPENED. I DON’T CARE FOR CHERYL BUT HER PARTNER IS GREAT. AS TO THE JUDGES. THEY HAVE THEIR FAVORITES AND RATE THEM HIGH AND THE REST ARE LEFT HANGING. I TRULY HOPE MARISSA TAKES THE WIN. IF NOT HER THEN JASON

I was really disappointed that the judges gave them all 7’s. I understand that Christian isn’t the top performer, and probably not one with the biggest fan base, but I can’t help but wonder if this injury had happened to Kristi or one of the other “favorites”, if the scores would have been different.

You could tell that Christian and Cheryl tried their best to continue the dance despite the injury, and he was extremely disappointed that this happened. Truthfully, if his arm feels better today, I think they deserve to re-do the dance, even if they don’t get re-scored, because the injury didn’t do them justice. No, it wasn’t a 10 performance, but it certainly wasn’t a 7 either.

I watched the entire show and was devasted when he was injured. The judges are cold and the dance team should have been excused and given another chance next week. There have been other injuries and Marie Osmond fainted on the show. I have never seen such a cold approach to someone who was injured. Of course, the whole country is cold and only concerned with themselves at this time in history. God Bless both and I pray he will be okay. He is such a nice person and a good dancer, but of course he is in cold America.

Hopefully Christian will be o.k. to continue next week. He has improved so much it would be a shame if he had to quit…Go guys….

CarrieAnne is always the hardest on the women dancers. Why is that I wonder? Perhaps the show needs to look for another judge next year…
