DWTS’ Cristian de la Fuente Injured on Dancefloor

April 28, 2008

Cristian de la Fuente’s samba came to halt Monday night — and the Chilean soap star was sent to the hospital — after suffering a severe muscle cramp in his arm on the Dancing with the Stars dancefloor.

“It hurts,” de la Fuente told cohost Samantha Harris backstage, holding an ice pack to his left forearm. “It hurts the arm and it hurts that I couldn’t do it, you know, it’s tough.”

Still, he put on a strong showing. Seconds after hurting himself, the actor faced the judges, insisting “I’m fine,” and clutched his arm in obvious pain before going to commercial break. During the dance he had tried to shake off the injury, but he pulled back from lifting his pro partner Cheryl Burke off the floor.

“When we were dancing I fell back into his arms and I heard something crack,” Burke told PEOPLE between tears after the show. “I am so worried. He is not a wuss. He tried to finish the dance.”

The EMT on site diagnosed a “severe muscle cramp,” cohost Tom Bergeron told the audience.

Meanwhile, the judges, who gave the couple straight 7’s (21/30) for their performance, had encouraging words. “I really appreciate you went the whole round and you were there for Cheryl,” judge Carrie Ann Inaba said, while Bruno Tonioli told him: “I hope you’re coming back because you are a great performer.” –with reporting by Monica Rizzo

When I saw him clutching his left arm, I was really afraid it was something heart-related. If it is just a muscle injury, he should consider himself lucky. The judges should have scored them 8’s….if he goes home, it would be a shame.

i voted for you Christian. Come back!

P J April 29th, 2008

It was so obvious that he was in pain, I hope he will heal and be able to finish up with the show. You could tell the minute he injured himself; and he tried his best to continue. I look forward to his continued performances if possible.

Janet April 29th, 2008

Giving them 7’s was insult to injury. You could tell he was hurting most of the dance. He has really improved and I hope he can stick around.

DFLY April 29th, 2008

I agree with “L”. The judges said they judge up to the injury, and Christian was hot! I almost fell off my seat when they got 7’s! Carrie Ann really bugs me.

Carol Griffin April 29th, 2008

I felt the judges should have given chritian and cheryl an 8. They were very good up to the point of injury. Len was particularly critical last night.

You could tell he was not faking his injury, he was in pain and disappointed that it happen. I think they should of gotten at least a score of 8’s. I hope he will be back. I know he is not going to be the no. 1 winner but he is doing a good job. Actually they all at this point is doing a good job, hard to say who should go home now. In the rewind of his dance you could see that he knew he had to catch Cheryl at the end and he was trying to figure out how to do it with his injury. He went on to finish even with his injury.

E April 29th, 2008

It served them right. On ET that aired 21st April they were picking on Shannon and Derek (who they supposed to be getting sympathy votes) in this way:

Interviewer: so you can get better scores by going on the beach and taking your shirt off
Christian: Or you call an ambulance when the cameras are on …and you (referring to Cheryl) start crying *Christian faking an injury and screaming*

So, there you are Christian. Be happy with your injury and all the votes you get with that.

love Christian and Cheryl hope they stay in. I love love love Mario and Karina so I hope more than anything Mario goes further. He tries really hard and you can see it in his rehearses, he is very humbel and so cute. GO Mario Go

Myrna April 29th, 2008

I’m sorry that Christian got hurt however I don’t think the judges should feel sorry for him they are not the best couple out there.
