Idol: Brooke White Says Goodbye

May 1, 2008

Brooke White, the willowy 24-year-old from Mesa, Ariz., was sent home Wednesday night. But with so few left, it wasn’t a huge shock. The judges seemed consistently iffy about Brooke’s folk-pop style in recent weeks, with Simon Cowell actually describing one of her Neil Diamond performances Tuesday as “a nightmare.”

Paired in the bottom two with Syesha Mercado, Brooke said at one point that she was in “that happy, grateful mood” no matter what happened. But the results at the end of the hour brought on some heavy tears from the contestant who has cried consistently on results nights throughout the competition.

The bigger shock came at the very beginning of the show when Ryan Seacrest informed Jason Castro that he was safe, despite a week that could best be described as tepid. It’s the dreadlocks, isn’t it? And that cute look of bafflement and naiveté? And maybe a public vote of sympathy after Paula Abdul’s strange double judgment of his single performance the night before.

But there were several happy surprises to pad out the cruel hour.

First Happy Surprise: Guest vocalist Natasha Bedingfield gave David Archuleta a big ol’ hug and a kiss. (Ryan joked that David might ask her to the prom.)

Second Happy Surprise: One of the night’s call-in questioners turned out to be a woman named Tara Miller, who kissed 9-year-old Simon back when they were growing up in England. Do you know her?

Third Happy Surprise: Mr. Neil Diamond himself. Despite looking like an old sailor, he was in fine, gravelly form singing his new single, “Pretty Amazing Grace.” –Tom Gliatto

Tell us: Did America make the right decision in sending Brooke home? Will you miss her?

I agree with the “who’s ablum would I buy” measure. I would buy Castro or Cooks album. I love his voice….not as much versatility as Cook but something pure about it. As much as I like Arch…his little boy charm wears off and I don’t see him able to carry that title. Brook..needed to go. S..definitely more on the Broadway scene.

FINALLY! Brooke stayed WEEKS longer than she should have! She cried for no reason at all every single week…her singing ability wasn’t even close to the rest of them. There is NO way she was “Idol Material”. She messed up by forgetting the words more than once but lied last week and said she’d never done that before when clearly she had when she sang the Sting song!! David Archuletta is the best…and,no,I’m not a teenager.I have sons older than he is. Syesha is alot better than Brooke. I love Jason when he chooses the right songs and David Cook is WAY over hyped!

Anyone else notice that Jason Castro was completely smiling when Brooke was singing at the end — i thought it was so odd. Anyways, according to dialidol — Syesha was actually number one and Archeleta was number 3 — Castro was supposed to be in the bottom 2 — did you notice that they never officially said that syesha was in the bottom 2?
David Archeleta fans better vote next week because he might be the shocker elimination.

I may be in the minority here but David A is the most unoriginal singer, he sounds the same and is far too “old” in his sound. I agree with the poster that said what sort of music would his album be? He isn’t rock? He isn’t folk? He isn’t country He just sounds like a lounge singer who to me at least sounds like he is copying frank sinatra or something. I find him to be the same every week. So far I liked Michael Johns, Carly sometimes and David Cook is the only talent left. Sayesha is beautiful but nothing great. Jason is just zzzzz.

Hope David C wins

Brooke is so much better than Jason. He’s such a bore with no change in tone, stage presence, etc. He just sits or stands there with those gorgeous blue eyes. That’s all it is, cuteness! I still am upset of how he ruined one of my favorite songs from Cats and if he doesn’t go next week, then I will not watch this show again. This was my first time watching AI and if he’s not gone next week, then I’m not wasting any more time. Listening to Jason Castro is torture. I pray that David Cook wins with David Archuleta following him and Syesha in third or even Syesha in second as those three are really good. Real talent!

Who’s ablum would I buy? Castro or Cooks.
Cook has more range but there is something unique and pure in Jasons voice. He doesn’t come across (clearly) in interviews very well but still love his voice. Arch — to little boy..that get’s old. He’s got a great voice but so many of his songs sound the same to me. Not as much depth and character to what I hear from him…and I like him. Maybe he will get more depth to his voice with time. S — definitely more Broadway. Brook — she seemed nice but really messed up more than she should have to pull the title..she needed to go after that first song..it really was bad.

It was time for Brooke to go. She was a bit syrupy but I think that’s just who she is. Very talented but not American Idol. I can’t believe Jason is still there. Syesha has an amazing voice and stage presence which is why she’s still on, not color. (pulleeze…get over the color stuff)
David A is a sweetheart.
David C is the next American Idol, whether he wins or not. From the start, he’s been the most consistent and comfortable on stage. Paula..OMG…what the heck?
Randy and Simon need to stay. Pls dont put Marie Osmond in Paula’s place or I’ll stop watching. Talk about syrupy!

Right on, Kevin!

Brooke sweetie, don’t cry cause it’s over, be glad because it happened. Winning isn’t everything. I voted for you 264 times one night just because you’re not afraid to show that you’re a christian! I can’t wait to hear you sing on Air1. :) You are beautiful inside and out, stay that way!

Oh My God its about time. She was so damn boring. Liven up there Brooke. She honestly could not have thought she was going to win????? David Cook is the best. He should win hands down. Jason Castro sucks too. Syesha should not have been int he bottom 2 she has an awesome voice. But David Cook…….. I never thought anyone could take a Neil Diamond song and make it sound so great. He actually could make a remake for that song. He is awesome. And if by some strange chance he doesnt win. He has already won. Just like Daughtry. He was too good for American Idol too and look where he is? Rueben, Fantasia, Hicks, where the heck are they?????? Daughtry, AWESOME SPECATACULAR And David Cook is right up there with Daughtry. I would love to see those 2 perform together.
