Idol: Brooke White Says Goodbye

May 1, 2008

Brooke White, the willowy 24-year-old from Mesa, Ariz., was sent home Wednesday night. But with so few left, it wasn’t a huge shock. The judges seemed consistently iffy about Brooke’s folk-pop style in recent weeks, with Simon Cowell actually describing one of her Neil Diamond performances Tuesday as “a nightmare.”

Paired in the bottom two with Syesha Mercado, Brooke said at one point that she was in “that happy, grateful mood” no matter what happened. But the results at the end of the hour brought on some heavy tears from the contestant who has cried consistently on results nights throughout the competition.

The bigger shock came at the very beginning of the show when Ryan Seacrest informed Jason Castro that he was safe, despite a week that could best be described as tepid. It’s the dreadlocks, isn’t it? And that cute look of bafflement and naiveté? And maybe a public vote of sympathy after Paula Abdul’s strange double judgment of his single performance the night before.

But there were several happy surprises to pad out the cruel hour.

First Happy Surprise: Guest vocalist Natasha Bedingfield gave David Archuleta a big ol’ hug and a kiss. (Ryan joked that David might ask her to the prom.)

Second Happy Surprise: One of the night’s call-in questioners turned out to be a woman named Tara Miller, who kissed 9-year-old Simon back when they were growing up in England. Do you know her?

Third Happy Surprise: Mr. Neil Diamond himself. Despite looking like an old sailor, he was in fine, gravelly form singing his new single, “Pretty Amazing Grace.” –Tom Gliatto

Tell us: Did America make the right decision in sending Brooke home? Will you miss her?

Although I’m not surprised that she was eliminated, I will definitely miss her presence. She brought something completely new to the show.

Finally!!!!!!

Not a surprise to see both girls in the basement.

David Cook’s the clear winner, lest America pulls a Daughtry; David “Up with People” Archuletta will pass through to the finale on the tween vote; Brooke will land a folk-label contract somewhere; Syesha and her abrasive stage-smile will wind up off-Broadway.

Jason Castro is the only real question-mark, and could be a spoiler for the David-David finale. Some of his performances have been positively magnificent, and he’s actually just doing exactly that for which DC is being praised – being himself – every week. Love it or hate it, you know what you’ll get from Castro, with occasional flashes of absolute brilliance (Hallelujah, Over the Rainbow).

I rate AI contestants by whether I’d buy their album. For me, that puts David Cook and Jason Castro in the one and two spots. Bless Archie and his unquestionable talent, but what sort of album is in this boy’s future? He belongs on Broadway, and Syesha could headline a touring company.

But the Idol faithful make these decisions. Cook might actually benefit from not winning, and I find myself conflicted. Paula did the franchise no favors with her epic flub on Tuesday.

I’d do her!!!!!

I’m not surprised at anything on this show. It’s a joke. It’s not about talent but who can make the biggist fool of themselves. I have been to some of these auditions (not as a contestant) and the real talent has not been choosen to perform. I feel that this show could be better if they really pick the best people and give them a chance. Those nuts need to left at home. That is the reason I am not watching the show this season. I was a die hard fan, but no more. In all essence Simon is right 99% of the time.

I hated so much to see Brooke go, she was my favorite from the start. I loved her style of singing, I loved her voice and she was so real. I doubt I’ll be racing to the TV to watch now that she’s gone. She was really the reason I watched.

Well, Jason really should have gone home already.

Each song sounds exactly the same

I was not surprised. The David’s have this contest in the bag!!!!!!!

It was sad for me to see Brooke go. She is well suited for the Country and Western music scene where her voice and talents would be greatly appreciated.

Syesha is a natural for broadway or the R&B scene.

I don’t know what keeps Jason C on the show? To me David C. and David A are the favorites to win. I hate to see either one lose.

Simon Cowell and his acid tongue is the shows nightmare.

i was glad to see Brooke go, she was very arrogant and thought she was another Carrie Underwood, she is a typical “stuck up” idiot !
