Paula Abdul: ‘No One Understands Me’

May 2, 2008

Paula Abdul showed her sense of humor Thursday night and joked about her recent “second song” gaffe.

“No one understands me,” Abdul, 45, said in a speech at Lupus L.A.’s Orange Ball, presenting an award to prominent L.A. physician Daniel Wallace. “By the way, are you singing two songs tonight?”

Abdul was referring to Tuesday’s American Idol, when she mistakenly critiqued contestant Jason Castro’s second performance, though Castro had only sung one song.

At Thursday’s event, Abdul said Dr. Wallace “helped save my business and my professional life,” but she jokingly asked for some assistance with her American Idol duties. “By the way, they’re causing me to say very mumbly-jumbly things on Idol. Help me.”

After her speech, Abdul told PEOPLE that she didn’t do anything wrong on Tuesday’s show and enjoys making light of the controversy.

“I have fun poking fun at a situation that’s so ridiculous. I’m the queen of taking the seriousness out of [it] … I loved that people laughed, it was funny,” she said. “Honestly, it was a silly thing [that happened on Idol]. We were all confused … I did exactly what the producers told me to do … It’s all good.”

But not everything is “all good” with the Idol judge. Abdul told the crowd that she’s living in pain despite appearing happy.

“Pain is very daunting — it creates isolation,” Abdul said. “For me, the smile on my face oftentimes is not met with how I feel inside.” She credited Wallace as “emotionally gi-normous” and “an amazing person that keeps me going even when I don’t want to.” –Nicholas White

i understand you! You rock!

Carla May 2nd, 2008

I feel for Paula. Living with long term chronic pain is a horrible life to live with. I know first hand. I also know when you are dealing with pain all the time , it makes it very hard to focus and concentrate. You get confused and “fogged” out if you will. It is part of the norm of C.I. to have congnative issues. It is a side effect of your bodies natural fighting of the pain. It can be a tough and emharrassing way to live. I commend Paula for not allowing media to smear her name by stating her as “drunk” , “confused” ect all the time. It is all ways to make money and sell mags! Unless you live with chronic pain , you realy have no clue as to how life changing and burdensome it can be. She is doing her best and I commend her highly for it!

So…. he is the one that prescribes your endless pain pills?

Lisa D'Ambrosio May 2nd, 2008

Give Paula a break! I don’t live with constant pain, and I can’t imagine what it’s like. As the saying goes, “until you’ve walked a mile in someone else’s shoes …”

Priscilla May 2nd, 2008

Zoey
Obviously, you know nothing about chronic pain or you would know that eventually “pain pills” do nothing for the pain. Everyone know matter how large or small will develop a tolerance to them. One eventually has to seek alternative means to help relieve even the smallest amount with things such as spinal blocks, nerve cauterization, biofeedback or relaxation breathing.

Just because Paula can be goofy sometimes, don’t be such a judgmental schmuck. It wouldn’t even take a mile of walking in her shoes with her injuries and you would be screaming for someone, anyone to help you.

I understand, Paula. You make me smile. How you can handle your pain and the crap that people decide to say how you is amazing. Go girl!

I have zero sympathy for Paula Abdul and here pain issues. I too and in endless pain – back, shoulders, knees, ankles, even toes. But I tell you this, I take nothing stronger than over-the-counter Aleve for the pain. It never goes away, but a little pain is better than looking for a complete moron with your head up your rectum every single moment.

Carly Smithson May 2nd, 2008

Paula is a disgusting, drunken, drug-addict. She can’t verbally string together anything coherent. American Idol, please drop her for someone more articulate.

LBW May 2nd, 2008

If she is in that much pain, then she should retire. People’s lives are affected by her in ways that she obviously doesn’t understand. This show is not about her, it’s about young people looking for the same chance that she already has had.

Elsie May 2nd, 2008

Paula i here where your coming from,i also live with chronic pain and know one could help me.you keep up the wonderful work you are doing.
GOD BLESS YOU
ELSIE
