Gossip Girl: Shocking Secrets Revealed!

May 6, 2008

Things are getting intense at the Van der Woodsen home! Gossip Girl was right when she said, “the truth always comes out,” on Monday’s shocker of an episode — especially when Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg) is in town! Not only did she out young Eric Van der Woodsen (Connor Paolo) at the dinner table, she also blackmailed his sister Serena (Blake Lively) by threatening to tell their dark and dirty secret. But pushed to her limits, Serena ultimately confided in her best friend Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) and revealed a truth more shocking than a sex tape. “I killed someone,” she said. Looks like Serena’s in for a rough patch thanks to her frenemy, but coming out and confronting the truth may actually be a good thing for her little brother. In his first interview since the show aired, PEOPLE spoke with Connor Paolo, 17, who plays Eric and asked him about portraying a gay teenager on television, what will happen next with Georgina’s reign of terror and how Eric’s coming out also brings out another truth: Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) may actually be a nice guy. –Liza Hamm

How does it feel to be playing a gay character on a popular TV show?
I’m an actor and it’s a part. Being gay is nothing but another way to live your life. It’s just who he is.

A lot of gay teens will be excited to see someone gay on the show. Are you ready for that?
I guess it’s a possibility that fans could take Eric’s coming into his own as a source of inspiration. He does it with a degree of gentility and self-respect. He doesn’t make apologies for who he is.

Did the fact that he tried to kill himself earlier have anything to do with being gay?
As the actor portraying Eric, I don’t believe that I tried to commit suicide because of that. Eric is 14 so his decision to be gay could be permanent. It might not be. It’s about finding yourself. At the moment, this is who he sees himself as … that’s very empowering.

How will the news play out in the next few episodes?
My issues get swept under the rug in the face of Georgina. She has information about my family that no one else is privy to. Dealing with Georgina becomes the main focus because things become very, very hairy.

How will the other characters react to the news? Everyone okay with it?
Each character has their own reaction. It does seem to create a rift between me and Jenny. Chuck steps up as big brother though.

So this brings out the nicer side of Chuck?
Eric’s relationship with Chuck is a vehicle for seeing that he does have a good side. He can be a good person when duty calls. Chuck seems to really care about Eric. It’s a time when Eric feels very alone. Chuck does not push him away as many other people are inclined to do. Eric gets to have a good time with Chuck. Most people have been coddling him because they think he’s a suicide risk, Chuck is totally open to let Eric enjoy his life rather than try to preserve it.

But there are going to be some intense discussions about the fact he’s gay, right?
Is there ever a Gossip Girl [episode] without them?

When did you find out your character was gay?
I was told about a month ago. Two of the producers explained the situation. It seemed like a good thing. Up to this point, I’ve had a volatile role on the show. Sometimes, I’m there. Sometimes, I’m not. It’s the producers giving me more screen time and a chance to prove myself as an actor — so I wanted to make sure I delivered.

Did you have to keep it a secret?
We tried to keep it under wraps as long as possible.

How did that go?
Pretty well, actually. The cast has as much to lose by secrets getting out. There’d been a lot of conjecture but no real facts had been slipped.

What helped you prepare for this episode?
I feel like I know Eric better than most people so I drew on my knowledge of the character. I did have some conversations with Stephanie [Savage, the executive producer] and Joe [Lazarov, also a producer] working out the ins and outs of how this developed.

What a crazy episode!

I knew it, I knew that it had to do something with a murder.
Now, I think that Serena was probably getting rape and then that’s when she killed “someone”; or it could be the other way around maybe Georgina was the one getting rape and Serena killed “someone”.

Im relief that Jenny finally ended things with Blair because it was making me sick but something tells me that they will be going at it again;

I want to know how are things with Nate and Vanessa!, they didn’t show anything about them.

next episode looks wild! lol I cant wait!

I so dying to know what else Georgina knows about Serena’s family, im pretty sure its something juicy!!

Thank goodness someone else has intelligence. A lot of people who watch GG are young girls so we see comments like;
“OMG i like freeked when she said she kiled someone, i like had chils it was so lik crazi” and comments like that make us embarrassed that we watch this show, but it has an adult following too so it’s al good. We like the Rufus Lily storylines well and most young kids have no real understanding of the adult aspect. There is nothing wrong with being young but the education of our young has gone down the toilet so seeing their mental grasp of things is quite sad sometimes.

We called the murder thing coming from the first time Georgina said she knew a big secret from Serena’s past. So last night was pretty anti climactic for us, instead we laughed. GG’s writers and creators need to be careful with introducing wild story lines too early on, where else is there to go after something like this? It happened to the O.C. so one would assume the creator who is now doing the O.C. would have learned from those mistakes. It’s easy to let a show like this become RIDICULOUS so we hope the writers are careful because it would be nice if the show was around for a while. No teen drama’s have done as well as 90210, but Aaron Spelling was genius and he knew how to pace things, now television is just about the rush and craziness. We don’t need that, calm things down a little and show us the essence of the characters instead of desperately searching for jaw dropping moments and storylines.

But kudos for the gay storyline we are a straight couple who are DISGUSTED with the way gay couples are treated in this world so anything to help future generations be more accepting, compassionate and respectful is a good thing.

As I was watching this episode it all became way too obvious, Eric approaching Jenny about her boyfriend, Jenny’s boyfriend being seen kissing a guy… Thats when i was able to put 2 and 2 together and figure it out. Basically, this season of gossip girls has me to the point that i refuse to walk out of my house on monday nights!

Loyal Couple, fyi….the adult parts are just boring

I love the show, but I really don’t like this new Georgina character. I understand she is there to stir up some trouble, but I really can’t stand her character!! I wouldn’t mind seeing her leave!!

I don’t understand why these kids are in high school and yet they are drinking heavily and getting into clubs? That’s a horrible message to send to young girls-that drinking is cool. This show blows.

You Suck, - E May 6th, 2008

Wow, Loyal Couple. Since you’re an “adult”, im completely shocked that you are making assumptions about today’s teenagers. I’m sure most of us are smarter than you.

Who said that we don’t care about the Rufus/Lily story lines. Well, I do,

If you really were an “adult”, you wouldn’t be acting like a total child. And let me just remind you, you were once a teenager as well.

Toodles!

From the first time my husband and I saw Connor Paolo on GG we were AMAZED, he is an absolutely incredible actor, the best young actor we have ever seen in fact. We were always so happy when he was onscreen because he has such a gentle demeanor and yet SO much depth. We are so glad that it looks like he will be a regular. Connor will do great things mark our words. He is really one to watch, all the actors on the show are fantastic, but he really stands out and has an old soul mixed with endearing youthfulness that is really quite wonderful. The character of Eric is a teen that parents could be proud to have as a son, he’s very well written and very well played. Eric’s scenes last night were incredible, especially with his mother, so touching. The character of Eric is very sensitive yet SO strong (he really has these very human contradictions, which makes him so realistic, most of us are all kinds of contradictions mixed together) it’s some of the best acting we’ve seen in ages, it could very well have been the scenes of an Oscar winning movie. It’s nice to see such heartwarming talent, it’s rare, but that’s what makes it so special!

Love the dramz <3

I was very excited to hear about this show coming out because I’d read almost every book in the series & it was thrilling to hear that my beloved books were coming to life. BUT, after the first few episodes, even though the show was great, I was slightly disappointed that the show was so far fetch from the story lines in the book; even the characters didn’t fit their physical profiles in the book. But, I must admit that this show is 10xs better than the books. Even though the characters are just as shallow & superficial as they are in the text, the show gives them more depth & you sense more emotion. I still love the books but this show is just fantastic. These new revelations are crazy. @ least they give a better reason as to why Serena left town than “I slept with my best friend’s boyfriend”. Murder is a way better excuse.
