American Idol

David Archuleta Rocks Idol

May 7, 2008

On a night dedicated to the songs of artists in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the final four were more like the final three — plus one. It was clear who the judges thought ought to go.

His name is Jason Castro.

Randy Jackson laughed off his cover of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff” as “really karaoke.”

Simon Cowell, his sensibilities clearly attacked by reggae and a guitar, used the word “massacre” and said, “I can’t imagine what you were thinking.”

Castro followed up with Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man,” which should have been a natural for him. But he forgot almost an entire line in the first verse. Paula Abdul thanked him for just existing — or something kind and vague.

Simon pronounced: “I’d pack your suitcase.”

The show’s emotional highpoint came courtesy of the only female left, Syesha Mercado.

Her version of Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” wowed Randy Jackson and Paula, although Simon shrugged it off as a bad impersonation.

In the second half of the hour, she came out in a gold gown that screamed “diva” and delivered a big, passionate cover of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.” Randy thought it felt “disconnected,” but Paula called it “a superstar performance.” She added, “Welcome to your dream.” With that, Syesha turned on the waterworks.

David Cook underwhelmed the judges with his version of Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf.” Simon thought it was “a little bit copycat.” But Cook rebounded when he sang the classic Who anthem “Baba O’Riley.” The judges all loved it. “Welcome back, David Cook,” Simon said.

David Archuleta, the contestant furthest away from rock, ended up having the best evening, scoring twice. He started with what Randy described as a “hot” cover of Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me.” David confessed, “I always sing it in my room, by myself.” (Note to David: Keep such thoughts in head.) He ended the night with a version of Elvis Presley’s “Love Me Tender,” that was, indeed, tender.

Simon said: “You didn’t beat the competition. You crushed the competition.” –Tom Gliatto

If Jason Castro does not go home there is something seriously wrong with this competition. I really think things need to change next year and give the judges 25% of the vote. Jason should have been gone weeks ago. Syesha has grown so much in the last three weeks and the two Davids derserve to stay.

Rachel May 7th, 2008

There’s no doubt the David’s are going to the finals. There’s amazing, delivering good performances week after week

Jodi May 7th, 2008

If Jason doesn’t go I am not sure I can continue to watch. Jason was interesting for about the first two or three shows but now it is as if he could care less. If you can’t remember the words to not only one but two songs, something is seriously wrong. He has had an “I don’t care” attitude for weeks. I hope the viewers give him what he wants, a ticket home.

I completly agree. If Syesha goes instead of Jason, their is something seriously wrong with the voters. Jason looks like he doesn’t even want to be there anymore and he hasn’t sounded good for weeks. I hope the screaming girls fans don’t save him again. Syesha was awesome last night. I don’t think David A. blew away the competetion last night, I think Syesha and David Cook were right up there with him.

Unfortunately, thanks to all the teenage girls out there who do nothing but vote a gazillion times over and over for the same contestants, Jason Castro will be in the final 2. If anything needs to change, it should be the number of times you can vote. Limit one vote per cell phone and 4 votes per household.

I love how Brooke can’t forget the words twice, stop her songs twice, and the judges tell her (well except for Paula one time) that it was the right thing to do and that it was fine. Jason tries to sing through forgetting a lyric and people are like O-M-G that is so horrible of you. FYI David A. forgot his lyrics during Andrew Lloyd Webber week and they never pointed that out. Jason does care, he is just a laid back hippie - don’t get it confused people. Anywhoo I am sick of hearing how perfect David A. is when he always cracks notes, it is always karaoke, and every song he sings he makes sound like the same exact ballad.

IMHO:

David Cook still rocked, just not as hard as usual lol…..

Syesha was the same ole same ole, and the tears were a bit much

David Archuleta still belongs on the Disney Channel

Jason was absolutely horrible and if he doesn’t go home I will quit watching (ok probably not a true statement lol) he blew both chances last night, c’mon American get it right ok…….Bye Jason!!!

Syesha is the most arrogant boring contestant. She has a pretty voice, a good voice, but she is nothing special and is really a diva. She is comparing herself to a civil rights movement? Give me a break. She needs to go.

Victoria May 7th, 2008

NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY, JASON YOU ROCK!

Nicholas May 7th, 2008

pharmgirl49, if david a performance is belong to disney channel, surely the judge will not give him heaps of praise. David A is really rules the night, and you must admit it, because that’s the truth!

I must say, David cook is very average tonight, he does not rock like what people think.

Yes, I do believe Jason still sing better than Seysha….
