Dancing with the Stars

Mario’s Surprise Dancing Elimination

May 7, 2008

It may have been Dancing with the Stars‘ 100th episode celebration, but someone still had to go home.

All eyes were on Marissa Jaret Winokur and Tony Dovolani
(the couple with the lowest score, 50/60, going into last night’s results show) as the next pair to be eliminated, but in a mild upset Mario and partner Karina Smirnoff became the eighth couple voted off DWTS.

Being the youngest contestant to grace the dancefloor, the 21-year-old R&B singer was a class act when it came time to say his farewell–even personally thanking his fiercest critic, judge Len Goodman.

After telling the crowd, “I’ve had a great time, a great partner and great competition,” Mario said: “Len, thank you for all the comments you made. Ultimately, you helped me become a better ballroom dancer. The comment about me being an inspiration to young people, I want to say that the real great ones are the young men and women fighting for our country…I had a ball. Thank you guys.”

Mario found himself in the bottom two with NFL star Jason Taylor, who until this week’s competition had been a darling of the judges and the viewers.

So heading into next week’s semifinal are Marissa & Tony, Kristi & Mark, Jason & Edyta and Cristian & Cheryl.

But last night’s show wasn’t just about saying goodbye, viewers got to see some of their favorite dancers and contestants from seasons past came back to help celebrate the 100th episode, including Julianne Hough and Apolo Anton Ohno, Mel B. and Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Mario Lopez, who pre-taped a performance with the cast of A Chorus Line.

Tell us: Were you suprised Mario and Karina were eliminated? Who do you predict will go into the final two? And what was your favorite moment of DWTS‘ 100th episode celebration?

Did anyone notice Karina last night and the way she acted after she figured out she was going to get voted off? She was a total brat - rolling her eyes and waving bye-bye before they even announced that she was going home. She lost points with me when she did that, so I’m glad she’s gone!

I like the remaining three contestants. I’d like to see Jason or Marissa win though - since Cheryl has already been crowned champion twice!

I still say Cristian should of done the right thing and left the show. Let healthy people dance! I think it’s selfish of him to stay. Marissa has the most desire to stay and dance but I think it will come down to Jason and Kristi.

I am so surprised, Mario was a class act throughout and strived to improve each week. I think his downfall was his partner. She is not well liked and unfortunately that affects the vote. Good luck to Mario!

I do not understand how Christian can get 10s when he can’t get his left arm into correct position for the dance moves as well as the posing. The arm is still a part of the dance and if he can’t get his arm into perfect position, how can he get a perfect score?

Karina was not being a brat she knew what was going to happen. This show is no longer about who is the better dancer it is about popularity which is wrong. Marissa is a pretty good dancer but she and Tony are not the best two to winthe golden globe.

Karina does that eye-rolling thing a whole lot!! I remember her doing back when her and Mario Lopez were on! I have never liked her since.

Denise May 7th, 2008

Yes, I noticed Karina rolling her eyes and waving bye-bye, DWS should not allow her back next year. She made remarks on the final show when she & Mario Lopez lost to Cheryl & Emment, she said on the air that the best dancer did not win. I don’t like her & would never vote for her, ABC GET RID OF HER!!!!

amy May 7th, 2008

Hate it for him, but glad to see her go!! I was tired of watching her roll her eyes and make her snide faces everytime their name wasnt called as “safe.” And it wasnt only last night, it has been every night!! I dont know why she has decided she is so special…….

I have always though Dancing with the stars and American Idol are a popularity contest. The real star never wins. Kind of sad. Almost like American politics - well maybe until last night. Barack looks like he’s on his way.
