Mario’s Surprise Dancing Elimination

May 7, 2008

It may have been Dancing with the Stars‘ 100th episode celebration, but someone still had to go home.

All eyes were on Marissa Jaret Winokur and Tony Dovolani
(the couple with the lowest score, 50/60, going into last night’s results show) as the next pair to be eliminated, but in a mild upset Mario and partner Karina Smirnoff became the eighth couple voted off DWTS.

Being the youngest contestant to grace the dancefloor, the 21-year-old R&B singer was a class act when it came time to say his farewell–even personally thanking his fiercest critic, judge Len Goodman.

After telling the crowd, “I’ve had a great time, a great partner and great competition,” Mario said: “Len, thank you for all the comments you made. Ultimately, you helped me become a better ballroom dancer. The comment about me being an inspiration to young people, I want to say that the real great ones are the young men and women fighting for our country…I had a ball. Thank you guys.”

Mario found himself in the bottom two with NFL star Jason Taylor, who until this week’s competition had been a darling of the judges and the viewers.

So heading into next week’s semifinal are Marissa & Tony, Kristi & Mark, Jason & Edyta and Cristian & Cheryl.

But last night’s show wasn’t just about saying goodbye, viewers got to see some of their favorite dancers and contestants from seasons past came back to help celebrate the 100th episode, including Julianne Hough and Apolo Anton Ohno, Mel B. and Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Mario Lopez, who pre-taped a performance with the cast of A Chorus Line.

Tell us: Were you suprised Mario and Karina were eliminated? Who do you predict will go into the final two? And what was your favorite moment of DWTS‘ 100th episode celebration?

WOW! I was never a Mario fan. Largely due to his partner Karina and her spoiled attitude since the first Mario loss. Mario impressed me greatly last night about which the true roll models were — Our Soldiers. Mario, because of your class act — You are a roll model of a different sense. You are remarkable. Too bad we didn’t see this part of you until you were voted off.

Yeah I never really like Karina…too conceited. It’s a shame that Mario had her as a partner because he really improved his skills and he is such a class act. His classy farewell outstaged her brattiness.

Marie May 7th, 2008

I gasped in disbelief, Marisa is the one that should have gone…..Mario had improved 150% and she did the same thru the whole season, I still cannot believe it……she better go!

Mario should not have left! …Marissa should have but oh well he is sexy and needs to go promote his awesome album anyways so good luck to you Mario! love ya! :)

What a RIP! I find it uncomfortable to watch Marissa dance. She’s heavy on her feet (no pun intended) and never takes chances. Anyone can learn the steps but to win you gotta step out of your comfort zone and take chances. She does not. Jason is most improved. Christian is now very limited and getting sympathy points. Kristi is by far the best…I don’t care if she has an edge…they let her on the show and she is polished, tight, taut EVERY TIME!

The best couple of the night??? Hands down -Julianne & Apolo!!! It was sooooooo good to see them dance together again!!! By the way, I just hope “the powers that be” get rid of Samantha next year - I’ve never seen anybody ask the most dumb ass questions that she does!!! You can’t tell me they give her those questions to ask!!!

Edyta has been on the show since inception. She has always acted gracious and has never won. I believe anyone hooked up with Karina is bound to loose. She always acts like she is better than everyone. Mario should not have been voted off, but his partner sealed his fate. This is not Karina’s first eyeroll. Karina should take notes from Mario and be gracious.

SUSAN May 7th, 2008

I agree. Karina was rolling her eyes and acting ugly. I’m glad she’s gone. I used to really like her, but now she just thinks she all that. I’m glad Marissa is still in there, but in the end I think it will be Jason & Kristi.

I refuse to vote for anyone that gets stuck with Karina! She needs to take a long break from the show. She’s terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She acts like a spoiled brat and is really not that special of a dancer. She needs to be replaced, NOW!!!!

Nan May 7th, 2008

Mario was not the reason he was voted off…look no further than his partner. ABC give your head a shake… axe the (teenage)drama queen.
