Mario’s Surprise Dancing Elimination

May 7, 2008

It may have been Dancing with the Stars‘ 100th episode celebration, but someone still had to go home.

All eyes were on Marissa Jaret Winokur and Tony Dovolani
(the couple with the lowest score, 50/60, going into last night’s results show) as the next pair to be eliminated, but in a mild upset Mario and partner Karina Smirnoff became the eighth couple voted off DWTS.

Being the youngest contestant to grace the dancefloor, the 21-year-old R&B singer was a class act when it came time to say his farewell–even personally thanking his fiercest critic, judge Len Goodman.

After telling the crowd, “I’ve had a great time, a great partner and great competition,” Mario said: “Len, thank you for all the comments you made. Ultimately, you helped me become a better ballroom dancer. The comment about me being an inspiration to young people, I want to say that the real great ones are the young men and women fighting for our country…I had a ball. Thank you guys.”

Mario found himself in the bottom two with NFL star Jason Taylor, who until this week’s competition had been a darling of the judges and the viewers.

So heading into next week’s semifinal are Marissa & Tony, Kristi & Mark, Jason & Edyta and Cristian & Cheryl.

But last night’s show wasn’t just about saying goodbye, viewers got to see some of their favorite dancers and contestants from seasons past came back to help celebrate the 100th episode, including Julianne Hough and Apolo Anton Ohno, Mel B. and Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Mario Lopez, who pre-taped a performance with the cast of A Chorus Line.

Tell us: Were you suprised Mario and Karina were eliminated? Who do you predict will go into the final two? And what was your favorite moment of DWTS‘ 100th episode celebration?

I think the 100th episode was a big let down. They talked it up so much, and it was boring. I did enjoy the performances by Rascall Flats and I loved Apollo and Julianne’s dance. They are so good together. Mel and Maks’ dance was ok. They basically took bits and pieces from their other dances and put them together. I was disappointed that they didn’t really focus on the returning celebrities. Why did they keep mentioning that 30 stars would be returning if we never got to see them?

I’m disappointed that Mario was eliminated. I thought he was much better than Jason, Christian, and Marissa. The “competition” has gotten ridiculous. Just end the show now and give the mirror ball to Kristi and Mark. They are the only ones left that really deserve it.

There is no way that Mario should have been sent home while Marissa is still there. That’s ridiculous! Mario was, by far, the best male dancer, miles ahead of Jason or Christian. Kristi is the consistently the BEST. I hope she wins!

i was so shooked when i read that mario was eliminated i want christian out so bad even though i love his partner he should be the bigger guy and leave i love marrisa and i want her to win because this is something she is good at

Personally, I think that Cristian is being selfish. Whoever made the comment “you need both arms for the poses” is right… plus if he does make it to the final it will be one of the most boring freestyles–he cant lift cheryl. PLUS im going to get really tired of just watching cheryl shimmy around her partner.

i think they had mario pegged from the beginning..and i agree that sadly, his partner’s attitude hurt him because women (myself included) think she’s a brat.

Jason looked clumsy in the last dance…but I guess because he’s a hottie people kept him on.

He did a great job dancing, and he tried!! Marissa should have been kicked out a long time ago! Cristian is amazing how far he has come along, even with a bad arm, no one can see!! Good luck to the remaining!!

WHO is voting for Marissa? She isn’t good!

heidi May 7th, 2008

No…I agree with Amy…She brought that duo down with her smirky looks throughout the season…Not the most likeable, that’s for sure…

Angela May 7th, 2008

I have to agree with most people that the show is much more of a popularity contest than a dancing contest. As much as I like Marissa, she is just not the best dancer…but she is entertaining to watch and it is nice to watch a positive person.
As far as the comments about Katarina…it is unfortunate that people want to see her go when the show is not about the professional dancers, it is about their partners. Yes, Katarina does not take criticism well and her facial expressions show it, but people voting should not cast their votes on who their favorite or least favorite professional dancers are.

They need to get rid of Samantha Harris; she is the WORST commentator ever. Tom does an outstanding job; Samantha is just useless fluff. ALSO, while I am overweight and couldn’t dance to any degree as well as Marisa does, she brings no enhancement to the program and does not have the capability (due to her size) of performing like the others do. SHE NEEDS TO GO; I also can’t stand her over-excitment at staying each week; GET OVER YOURSELF. Christian shows true “the show must go on” I’d like to see him win

Beth May 7th, 2008

I completely agree. Marissa CAN’T DANCE! It’s so disappointing to see people who have no dance ability and simple routines get through to the next round…Pathetic!
