Idol: Jason Castro Waves Goodbye

May 8, 2008

The dreaded moment has finally arrived for Jason Castro.

The 21-year-old singer from Texas was the first of American Idol’s final four to be cut from the competition.

David Archuleta, Syesha Mercado and David Cook will continue on their quest to be the next American Idol, which includes hometown visits next week, before the show’s finale on May 21.

Castro couldn’t have been too surprised after Tuesday’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performances. First, he sang Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff,” which Randy Jackson said sounded “really karaoke.” Simon Cowell called it “utterly atrocious.”

For his second song, Castro attempted Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man,” but forgot the lyrics. Simon told him, “I’d pack your bags.”

Backstage, Castro seemed disappointed. “I don’t know what happened,” he said with a nervous smirk. “Everything just got all off.”

Syesha joined him in the bottom two Wednesday and Ryan Seacrest asked them both about the previous night. “It’s just getting tough for me. I think my inexperience is coming in,” Castro said. “This week I tried to pick two [songs] I knew and even that, I screwed it up.”

But despite ending his run on Idol, Castro showed his laidback sense of humor and that spacey charm that made him so likable: “Somebody told me I shot the ‘Tambourine Man’ yesterday.”

Tell us: Did American make the right decision in sending Jason Castro home?

Should have happened weeks ago. Never tried very hard. That dreadful roadkill on his head didn’t help.

Brook White must have given Syesha a lesson on winning sympathy votes before she left because the crying last night was so unnecessary! She totally pulled the race card, too. Desperate.

I’m ok with Jason going home because I really think he wanted to go. The judges totally attacked him on Tuesday night and probably made him feel like he was horrible and not wanted in the competition. & I’m happy I voted for him every week, as many times as I could because I think he is truly amazing and at the end of the day, his voice is what I want to hear. I’ll always be a Jason Castro fan <3

Yeah! He did both Marley and Dylan an injustice to their music.

Ya think.

for the record, I don’t understand Carmen’s race card comment, and I think that is harsh to assume/judge. I said ‘yeah’ for the dude exiting.

Jason’s a natural. What you see is what you get and that’s why his fans love him. He’s real and you don’t see that very often any more. He’s like a breathe of fresh air. I never thought he belonged on Idol; in many ways he’s too good for it.

Maureen May 8th, 2008

It was definately his time to go. I liked him at the beginning but he’s no competition for the two David’s. Syesha should be next. As far as the crying goes…it was genuine. Her song meant a lot to her and when Paula complimented her it set off a wave of emotion. Give the girl a break!

Terri May 8th, 2008

He seemed very relieved to be leaving. I think he knew it was his time to exit!

Sarah May 8th, 2008

Finally!

Bernie May 8th, 2008

Ditto ABSK. I don’t understand Carmen’s ‘race card’ comment either. Perhaps Carmen has a few cards of her own….?
