Britney Spears returned to CBS’s How I Met Your Mother Monday as Abby, the silly-vulnerable receptionist with an unrequited crush on Ted (Josh Radnor). The ratings spiked with her first appearance, so she was quickly shoehorned into this new episode.

The fact that Britney’s second guest spot really didn’t work was no fault of hers. She’s not at all bad at playing clunkily-sweetly dumb. I liked the way she tried to vent her conflicted feelings of anger and love for Ted while lying in bed and staring dreamily at the ceiling: “You know what I hate most about Ted? His stupid hair … His stupid, lame, awesome hair. It’s so stupid and awesome,” she said with a cute, singsong lilt.

But the script was an awful piece of specialty construction. Abby’s reverie occurred in a bed shared with Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), who was also feeling rejected by Ted — as a friend. His and Abby’s mutual annoyance turned them both on, so they slept together.

Then they decided to pose as a couple to annoy Ted. Then Barney carried the joke too far by proposing to Abby. Then Abby suddenly thought Barney really loved her. Then, to get out of the engagement, Barney told Abby that their romance had done the trick and now a jealous Ted did love Abby. And then Abby got this crazy love-hungry Shelley Winters-like gleam in her eye, setting up the possibility for a third guest spot.

Well, that’s a lot to cram into the subplot of a 20-odd-minute show. It would have taken me less time to type out the synopsis of Dangerous Liaisons. The twists felt arbitrary and perverse, even for a so-so sitcom, which is what HIMYM is.

It’s time for Britney to move on to her next cameo project. Ugly Betty would have been a good fit, but Lindsay Lohan is already there. –Tom Gliatto

i think Britney was funny and I love seeing her do things like this after everything she’s been through. But after watching this episode I do feel they should have left Abby’s character alone after the first episode she was in.
I ADORE this show but don’t want to see it ruined by big celeb guest spots. It should be focusing on the story its trying to tell.

I thought she did well, the writers could have been more creative with the plot and personality of the character, but Brit did an excellent job, I think bringing her back down the road as maybe a season finale character say she ends up in dentist office and he goes in there and flash back, but all in all she did great.

PLEASE DON’T put her on anymore shows; it was honestly painful and it was not the writing. Everyone tiptoes around the girl now afraid what will happen next.

This show is lucky to be popular before her, because I wouldn’t keep watching it if this were a permanent gig. Her lines sounded like she was looking at cue cards, it wasn’t a dreamy ditzy look, she was staring off set for her lines. I can’t believe that so many people are ready to call this a success so soon after all of her issues. She needs to disappear for a couple of years and reinvent herself.

I thought Britney did an AWESOME job! I watched both episodes (and I’m not a fan of HIMYM) because I wanted to see how she did. I think she was FANTASTIC on both episodes with what she was given!

I think alot of the things written about her are slanted to make her look bad - those photographers don’t make as much money if they just get a shot of her walking with someone or something; they get the big bucks for every bad moment they catch on film!

I think she is just a young person who is struggling with this disorder and she has made mistakes. Who hasn’t? People (everyone) expect TOO MUCH out of other people and are not willing to forgive mistakes. Society has become all about instant-gratification and people better not mis-step or they won’t be forgiven.

Get over it people - she’s a human being and deserves to have a second chance (or as many as it takes).

I was anxious to watch the show to see Brittany, not because I listen to her music, but to see that she is o.k. SInce it was my first time watching the show, I found that nothing was real or humorous and the acting on everyones part seems to off, not convincing at all.

A lot of people watch HIMYM. It’s a great show with inventive dialogue and solid acting. Last night episode was not great. Britney looked awkward and uncomfortable, especially in the scene when she was in bed with Barney. It was like she was trying too hard. I not saying she’s a bad actress, I thought she did fine in the first episode. I do agree it’s time for her to do something else and let HIMYM return to making great episodes.

i am so glad that she is doing better. i did not watch either of these shows, but only read about them. since sam lufti is gone it seems to me that her life has improved 100 percent. that man had to be drugging her. i can’t wait till she gets her boys back for good and kevin federline has to work for his money instead of living off of hers. that is the only reason that he married her. he’s a vampire.

HIMYM is a fantastic show… quirky, funny and original! Brittney did an okay job, she is/was better than I would have expected. I do agree with Neil Patrick Harris, that the show does not need to be like Will and Grace and get guest stars to hype ratings. The show has a loyal following that is continuing to grow!

Can we say “over-act”? She was awful! Her shrill and nasally voice grated at me whenever she was on the screen. I agree the plot wasn’t the best the show has done. However, HIMYM is one of the most underrated shows on TV. Britney is not doing it any favors. She’s ridiculously awful. I’m glad that she is getting her life back on track but if I were her manager I would suggest sticking to what you know- music and dancing.

I haven’t seen this episode yet, but HIMYM is the best sitcom on TV right now. For my generation anyway (25 - 35), these guys are just like us and hilarious.

Her acting was very “Mickey Mouse Club-ish”. Fine if you want that, but not very well done as a mature actor. Not that HIMYM is looking for that…so she fit in. She wasn’t any less pathetic than the role for Barney.

The whole episode was beyond stupid. I watch the show ocassionally and tuned in last night specifically to see Britney … now I wish I hadn’t. The story line made no sense and Britney was terrible. Britney did a great job and I think it is time we all help another human being get back to being normal. My husband and I agreed Britney ROCKED in the Abby role. I’m almost 50 years old and really don’t even know her music, but was amazed that she can really act! She was completely in character, very funny, endearing and bubbly. I’d love to see her making more cameo appearances like this. HIMYM is definitely better than a so-so sitcom. It’s very clever and usually well written. The episode last night, however, wasn’t good. It seemed like they wrote the episode just to have Britney back, not because it actually made sense for the show. In general, it’s a really amusing, under-rated show and I hope they don’t ruin it by trying to garner big ratings with big celebrities.

Well I didn’t see all of the show just the the little previews, but what I seen wasn’t good, all of her fans think she is great, but in reality she’s not ready for Prime Time, she got the job on her name, if anyone else would try they could do just as good as her. If the show is doing fine they need to leave her out of it. Bringing her on won’t help ratings they’ll drop, so when judging be impartial, don’t just say she’s great because you like her!!!

I actually agree with you 100% Mr. Gliatto. Last time you reviewed the episode, I tore you apart and thought you were being too harsh and analytical. I’m surprised by your review this time and the fact that you hit it dead on. She did OK but, the writing was horrible and it did seem like they just came up with it really quickly to get her on again, which is just dumb to do. I am a fan of the show very much so, and am disappointed.

In the old days of TV, when a singer appeared as a guest star, they’d figure out some (usually dumb) way to have them sing one of their songs. Why can’t they figure out a plot twist to make this happen now? The numbers would go through the roof! The writers ARE back, right? They should be able to make this happen. Think Karaoke night.

Gliatto get a new job. HMYM is one of the most well written sitcoms for the 25-35 age group. I’m willing to bet that Gliatto has never watched the show except when B. Spears is on — which are not the best shows, because they have to fit her in somehow. If Gliatto trying to be a so-so editor he hit the mark, but a real TV editor would try watching some TV not just the “hot” shows.

I’ve just recently been introduced to HIMYM and I laughed so much while catching up on their first two seasons. I have to say that I hope Britney doesn’t come back. It’s actually nothing against her personally; I just think she can’t act. And both times she appeared on the show, her acting (and her voice) were very distracting and I couldn’t enjoy the show. I agree with Tom that the writing wasn’t good for last night’s show. Sticking with Ted’s story is what makes the show funny and worth watching - not celebrity guests.

I’m definitely on Brit’s side, however, how could ANYONE say that she did good last night????? She was horrible! I will add, though, that she looked magnificent! I personally think the show SUCKS and all of the actors in it, not only Brit.

I thought Brit did really well. She was funny and hid her accent well. And she spoke without chewing gum, which is a first.
The script seemed a little thrown together. Maybe a last-minute choice to stunt cast?
The show has little going for it in terms of writing, though, so it’s no surprise.
The cast (at least a couple of them) are talented and funny, so I suppose that’s what carries the show.
I feel like they never really explain what the heck the premise of the show is? Is Hannigan the “Mother” he meets? Who is the main character? It’s a weak sitcom, but must have a little juice if they are stunt-casting Brit-Brit.

I’m all for second chances, but SERIOUSLY?!? I think this role (both the first and second episode) would have been MUCH better with another actress in it.. I just felt like I was watching some child star auditions or even worse, school play auditions.. It was absolutely horrible.. Her delivery was nothing to write home about either time she was on, and I pray that HIMYM’s writers, producers, or whomever stick to why the show works for the fans and don’t stoop (as Neil Patrick Harris said) to publicity stunts like this again..

Does CBS really care so little about quality that they go for a ratings stunt like this again?? I surely hope not!

Britney did a great job. She is natural in her expressions and voice pitch. Britney will do very well transferring her skills in plays and comedy. It is apparent that she works very hard. I think a sitcom developed around Britney’s character and talents would be extremely successful. She is entertaining to watch.

Yes, Brit made mistakes, some of which can be blamed on her bipolar (and some not)But with the paps, they LIVE and BREATH for the “dirty laundry” of others. Downplaying anything good or progress made and totally over-reacting to anything bad. I think it’s time that this girl be given a break!

HIMYM is far better than so-so; along with Scrubs, it is one of the best shows most people don’t know about. I do worry about the latest trends of stunt casting and the forced catchphrases. In the 1st season, some of the phrases started to catch on and now it looks like they’re trying to force a new catchphrase down our throats every episode. It’s like they’re trying to be Seinfeld. GCWOK? Really?…REALLY? They need to stop trying so hard…the characters stand on their own.

I think they mishandled Britney’s return. I thought she did a great job on her 1st appearance, but surely there was a more natural way for her to return to the show, seeing as Ted is DATING HER EMPLOYER. Wouldn’t it have made more sense for her to make her return appearance in Stella’s office - maybe trying to sabotage Ted & Stella? The whole thrown together Abby-Barney subplot did not work for me.

What is wrong with you people? She was terrible in both episodes! The only time I think she was ever decent at acting was in that movie she did “Crossroads”. Apparently, when you’re diagnosed as bipolar, you lose all ability to act. HIMYM, is an okay sitcom, which her role has done nothing for. Talk about May sweeps gimmicks. They need to push through this part of the storyline quickly and move on!

Let me preface this with I loved Britney on Will and Grace. But I didn’t think that Britney could get worse then the first time on the show, oh god I was soooo wrong!!! She was dreadful! A so-so sitcom? HIMYM got dumbed down for the Britney craze. Event Neil Patrick Harris said in an interview he wants people to watch the show because it’s a good show and not because Britney Spears was in it for two episodes. I’ve been a die-hard fan from the very first episode. It still holds my attention and that was before Britney.
I do agree the episode was a bit convoluted but in no way is it a reflection of the show overall. Apparently the critic doesn’t watch the show.

HIMYM is anything BUT a so-so sitcom. The show’s problem is the creators feeling obligated to ram Britney into its show to gain ratings and insure renewal for a 4th season. I dare Mr. Gliatto to watch the following episodes and then say it’s a so-so sitcom: The Slutty Pumplin, The Pineapple Incident, Drumroll Please, World’s Greatest Couple and Slapbet, just to name a few. Watching the show just because Britney is there doesn’t make you an expert on the show, just someone who is paid to follow Britney’s trail.

JOANNE - I totally thought that too. When she wasn’t saying her lines, she was waiting to say them. That’s not acting. And if it is, then it’s bad acting. It was painful to watch. Her facial expression during the scene when they were talking in bed made me cringe!

This is a great show that usually showcases some fine writing. They should stick to that and forget the celebrity gimmicks.

I actually liked the first episode than this one, it was a bit too much and the story line wasn’t that special, I thought Abby and Barney will take their revenge even further and milk it in front of Ted throughout the whole episode oh well…people judge Britney based on her personal life, not her work on the show, so many great artist have done horrible thing yet people forgave them just cuz they are considered legends. Reading off cue cards is something a lot of actors do, Marilyn Monroe uses it all the time. For a popstar doing acting, she puts a lot of spunk into while other singers are bland and boring, even Madonna is a worse actress than her.

Were we watching the same show? And are the two Britney episodes the only two you’ve seen of HIMYM? It’s true that this wasn’t the best episode. Both Britney episodes seemed a little contrived and her weak acting skills did not help.

But, I’m sorry, a so-so sitcom? I have seen every episode of HIMYM, and I think it is one of the funniest shows on television. The writing is clever and the acting is superb–I especially love the Barney, Lily, and Marshall characters.

Perhaps you should stick to reviews of Law and Order and CSI, because you clearly don’t have the sense of humor to review comedy.

If she’s a good actress….which she made me led to believe, I don’t mind having her on the show, but indeed it seemed kind of forced…after all, it’s just a guest spot. Then again…I liked her very much and I’m not a big Britney fan. Her music sucks and her body’s for sale…not much for me to cheer for. But this role makes her look good for the American public too
