Idol’s Final 3: Who Owned the Night?

May 14, 2008

In three rounds, David Archuleta, Syesha Mercado and David Cook battled it out on stage Tuesday on the last performance night before the American Idol finale. Simon Cowell declared David Cook the winner. David Archuleta was a close second, even though he wobbled a bit while singing a Chris Brown song. And sadly, even nice judge Paula Abdul told Syesha Mercado, “I don’t know if it’s going to be good enough to get into the finals of American Idol,” after Mercado’s final song of the night.

First Round: Judges’ Choice
Paula picked Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes” for David A. He seemed completely at ease with the song. Randy told him, “The Billy Joel thing works on you.” And Paula said, “I felt you were a storyteller … It was a beautiful performance.”

Randy chose “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys for Syesha. In a glittering gold dress, Syesha shined. Randy said she was “peaking at the right time” and Simon said she looked “gorgeous.”

Simon picked Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” for rocker David C. He delivered a slow and controlled performance, building up to a high note at the end, which Randy loved. “That is one of my favorite songs,” Paula told him. “And now you’re the second favorite person who sings it.”

“It was one of your best performances to date,” Simon declared. “Round one goes to Cook and Cowell.”

Second Round: Contestants’ Choice
A nervous-looking David A. picked Chris Brown’s “With You,” which started off very awkwardly. Was it the odd moment between him and host Ryan Secrest just before he moved to the stage? Randy didn’t buy the performance when David sang lyrics like, “hey boo” and “hey lil’ mama,” but Paula thought he did a great job. Simon told him: “It was a little bit like Chihuahua trying to be a tiger.”

Syesha chose Peggy Lee’s “Fever,” partly because she wanted to “work it a little” with a chair. Randy thought she sang “amazingly well” but Paula still wasn’t sure who Syesha was as an artist. Simon’s comments were the harshest: “You will probably regret that decision,” he said. “It sounded like a lame cabaret performance.”

David C. had the “perfect song choice,” according to Randy, when he sang Switchfoot’s “Dare You to Move.” Paula wanted more and Simon thought the entire round was just “okay.”

Third Round: Producers’ Choice
Producers handed David A. “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg. Paula said simply, “It was very lovely … I expect nothing more.” Simon thought he sang the song’s “absolutely horrible” lyrics “very well” and declared, “You’ve done enough to get into the finals next week.”

Syesha’s final song was “Hit Me Up” by Gia Farrell from the Happy Feet soundtrack. Simon worried that she didn’t have a defining moment and Paula told her, “I don’t know if it’s going to be good enough to get into the finals.”

David Cook ended the night on a high note with his version the of much-covered “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” Paula said she’d see him in the finals and Simon declared him the night’s winner.

Tell us: Which performance was the best of the night? Who did the best overall? And who will go home?

All in all nobody really stood out for me last night. But I really believe it is time for Syesha to go home. The two Davids deserve to be in the finale and thats the way it should be! I am hoping that David C wins it all. I hope enough rockers voted for him lol! GO DAVID C!!!!

I LOVE DAVID COOK! HE’S ABSOULTELY AMAZING!!! I THOUGHT HE WAS THE BEST BY FAR AND DAVID A. WAS PROBABLY SECOND, ALTHOUGH I PREFER SYESHA. DAVID A HAS A GOOD VOICE, BUT HE’S SO ANNOYING.

Noelle May 14th, 2008

David Cook should win, hands down.

Ryan May 14th, 2008

David Cook is going to WIN!

I don’t see the appeal of Archuletta. He’s a wimpy little high schooler that won’t sell many records. He’s boring and can’t carry a current song. DAVID COOK ALL THE WAY! It’s time a rocker won. He was amazing with the phantom of the opera song and he rocks it out!!! Bye Bye Syesha and than Bye Bye to Archuletta next week.

I am a big Brooke White fan so I really miss her. She should still be on the show instead of Syesha, that was what should of happened. Brooke is the best and I can’t wait to see her next week at the finale. I thought Syesha did very well last night, I was impressed. The two Davids are probaly going to be in the finale, but I think Syesha did a little better then them.

I agree I’m not sure what the appeal of David A. is. I find him annoying. Every song he sings sounds the same. He has a terrible stage presence. I am astonished that he is in the top 3.

David C. was not my favourite going into the final 10 but he has grown on me. He has talent. I would buy his CD and go to his concert.

Syesha has talent. She has an amazing voice.

David A. has to go. He does not belong in the final two.

they were all great last night and i wish all of them the best. today i think syesha is going home because she did the worst out of al of them. it is such a shame. i love syesha. anyway. the davids will be in the finals and it is hard to say who will win. in my opinion david a. will win– i say that just because i love him<33333!!

David Cook was the best lastnight. Although I thought he could’ve chosen a better song for his second performance. I loved his first and last performances. David A makes me want to vomit. He messed up the words to his second song and not one of the judges said a word about it. I think he needs to go tonight and David C and Syesha should be in the finals next week. I guess we’ll wait and see!
