Dancing with the Stars: Kristi Takes the Crown!

May 20, 2008

After five seasons of watching the men win Dancing with the Stars, Kristi Yamaguchi broke the curse and raised the mirror-ball trophy in triumph for the ladies.

“I love it! I guess ‘k’ is a good initial to have,” Yamaguchi gushed to host Tom Bergeron moments after she and partner Mark Ballas learned they had won.

Not since General Hospital actress Kelly Monaco’s win in season one has a female contestant been Dancing champ.

And Yamaguchi pulled it with absolute perfection, scoring 10s for all three of her finale dances–a first in Dancing history.

“I’ve had the experience of a lifetime,” Yamaguchi told PEOPLE. It’s great to know after having two kids and not competing for 16 years that I can still push myself.”

Yamaguchi’s closest competitor, NFL star Jason Taylor, who was partnered with pro Edyta Sliwinska, was runner-up. Cristian de la Fuente and his partner Cheryl Burke finished in third place.

With a perfect 90 out of 90 from the judges, Yamaguchi and Ballas also won the viewers’ vote.

Praised all season-long for her technical ability, Yamaguchi fell short when it came to showing more of her personality in the dances. But the gold medalist figure skater was the complete package during the two-night finale, showing off complicated lifts, flips and everything in between.

She and Ballas headed into Tuesday night’s third and final dance at the top the leader board, having scored perfect 10s for their previous two dances, the cha-cha face-off and their high-flying hip-hop flavored freestyle, which even blew away the usually conservative head judge Len Goodman. They completed their perfect set of scores with another set of 10s for their jive on Tuesday.

Before the finale, Yamaguchi told PEOPLE, “I want to defy the odds. i’m going to go for it. We need some girl power out there.” And she delivered perfectly.

Tell us: Did Kristi and Mark deserve their win?

Yes, they deserved to win. They did an awesome job. But Jason and Edyta did a good job tonight as well. It was nice to see competitors who actually seemed to respect each other (after the way some of the previous seasons have ended with pouting and spouting). Can’t wait ’til September. :)

YES YES YES! They danced perfectly. Whoever said it’s unfair for Kristi to win should get a grip. Ice skating and dancing are pretty different. If you don’t believe me, try it. But they were perfect. No one’s ever deserved it more!

YAY KRISTI!

I’m so glad Kristi won! The judges were right when they said that she was consistently the best dancer this season. She deserves it! And Jason is a great runner up. Overall, I think this season was right on as far as who won and couples going home when their time was up.

Producer: “Let’s get all of the former contestants to perform the dances which they weren’t great at and got voted off for.”

ABC exec: “Bad dancing for over an hour? Great idea!”

Now that it’s over, Jason needs to get back to Miami for the job he is being paid for. As a fan of his, not showing up for practice this week so that he can stay in New York and Los Angeles to “handle some business” really makes me lose some respect for him. If you want to pursue other professions, fine and no problem, just retire first.

Congrats to Kristi!

WOOOHOOO….YAY FOR KRISTI AND MARK!!

Billie Taylor May 20th, 2008

Even though I voted for Jason Taylor and his partner, I am not bitter. Kristi did a wonderful job so she deserve it, but Jason did a wonderful job also, plus he has my last name so I just had to vote for him, and last, but not least, he is so handsome and polite.

Thats all folks!!

I’m mad at this whole season. KY was great, BUT she is trained in and understands dance, lines and choreography. She had an edge over a COMEDIAN, TENNIS PLAYER, FOOTBALL PRO, MAGICIAN, ELVIS WIFE, etc…. female winner or not, she should have never been on DWTS in the first place based on her background.

GIRL POWER.

Kristy and Mark so deserved to win. Congrats.

She is one of the best non professional dancers I have ever seen.

She and Mark were a fantastic team.

Congratulations to all. Everybody had great attitudes. FUN FUN FUN to watch everyone have such a good time.

Of course Kristi deserved it. I don’t know of any other winner who deserved it more. The female dancer always has to be a stronger, more precise dancer…and that’s why the male celebrity has won in the past seasons. This season, Kristi held her own next to Cheryl, Edyta, and all the other beautiful female dancers. Congratulations to Mark for making Kristi into an awesome dancer. He deserves most of the praise! She definitly won because of him!
