Matthew McConaughey’s Brother Gets a Reality Show

May 26, 2008

Rooster McConaughey (real name: Michael Patrick McConaughey) has some serious pipes but he’s not a singer. His job, as a pipe supplier, is much less glamorous. It’s also less glamorous than his brother’s gig as a Hollywood hunk — and PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive, Matthew McConaughey.

Rooster is one of the good ol’ boys (he named his second son Miller Lyte after his favorite beer) starring in a new reality show from the producers of the gripping series Deadliest Catch and Ice Road Truckers, which offer a glimpse into the lives of men with some of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

Black Gold (premiering June 18 on truTV) takes viewers inside the race to find oil in Texas. And while Rooster does not work on an oil rig, he supplies the pipes for the drills, which typically go down 10,000 feet below the earth’s surface. That’s a lot of pipe.

But the high stakes business of drilling oil is competitive and risky. When the oil business went bust, Rooster lost everything and ended up renaming his company Chapter 11 Pipe. If it happens again, maybe he can follow in his brother’s footsteps. After all, he did appear in 1998’s The Newton Boys.

“miller lyte” enough said. clearly this guy has issues.he seems the complete opposite of his brother and where i come from good ol boys is another term for racist.

Charlsa May 27th, 2008

He is from Midland, Texas. He is a really great guy!! It is just a totally different mind set around here in the oil field.

Lola May 27th, 2008

Good ‘ol boys just means he’s a country boy, not all country boys are racists! That was pretty ignorant. Miller Lyte as a name, yeah pretty ridiculous, but not a racists!

ss May 27th, 2008

So just because he’s a “good ole boy” he’s considered racist. I thought it was that kind of narrow-minded thinking and stereotyping that those of us who are not racist are trying to avoid. You should do your homework before you are so quick to judge.

I do wonder….did he get a TV show simply because of his famous brother?

Just food for thought. Because personally, I won’t be watching this…it just seems like producers are pushing their luck with their audience.

As a person who is from a super small, Southern town, I can tell you that probably at least half of the people you think are racist probably don’t know that they are being that way. They just haven’t been exposed to as much as others. After moving away and meeting all kinds of people and realizing everybody wasn’t like the “stereotypes” (and by everybody, I mean ALL people regardless of color, sex, etc.)I realized that a lot of people are just “sheltered” from that experience. Plus, when you say all “good ol’ boys” are racists… you are just feeding another stereotype… That’s like saying all northerners are in the mob. Doesn’t make much sense does it?

Liz May 27th, 2008

Is there anything or anyone television producers won’t make a reality show about?! I like Matthew McConaughey and all but this is so lame. And by the way I live in Alabama and when we have discussions about ‘Good Ole Boys’ it definitely means someone with *ahem* ‘Old Fashioned Beliefs’. But it may not mean the same thing to everyone.

MattFan24 May 27th, 2008

I forgot to mention. The show sounds boring. It woulda been funnier if they had put him in a dating show, like the Bachelor—country style. Or like The Simple Life except reversed… he could switch places with Paris Hilton or something… lol

Seriously, to Tunde, or whatever YOUR REAL NAME IS, GET OVER YOURSELF! It’s just a name, we should all be trying to get along, not accuse people of being racist just cuz THEY LOVE NAMING THEIR KID AFTER BEER!!!!!!!!! WTF?!?!?!?! Tunde, get a life and live and let live. I do wish Mr. Rooster the best at his new carrier. Tunde should get counciling. Nuff’ said.

Ashley May 27th, 2008

Good Ole Boy means exactly what it says, they are good ole boys not thugs, not drug dealers, not racist!! They are as southern as it comes. They are Country boys. It is incredibly ignorant to assume that by saying someone is a good ole boy they are racist!!!!
