Laura Fedor, 18, and 16-year-old Sophie Zalokar, friends from Willoughby, Ohio, who are competing on the 6th season of Nashville Star as a duo, delighted the live audience with a country performance of “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” on Monday’s “pop goes country” night.
While their charming rendition of the Michael Jackson’s 1982 hit also pleased the judges, they got as much attention for their frilly dresses as their performance. “You two look like you should be on top of a cake,” John Rich said. Jewel added, “You look like Madonna cupcakes!” Laura, who still has a mouth full of braces, took Jewel’s critique as a compliment and squeaked, “I love cupcakes!”
But cupcakes are clearly not on the menu for their competitor, solo singer Melissa Lawson, the 31-year-old mom of five boys, who gave a dramatic interpretation of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors,” before proudly announcing that she has lost nearly 70 lbs. since starting down the path to Nashville stardom. Though contestants are confined to one secluded and heavily guarded wing of the famed Opryland Hotel (where they have no access or communication with friends or family), she’s been taking daily power walks up and down the hall with 19-year-old male model Justin Gastin, who sang Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.”
Sadly, she’ll need a new workout partner as Gastin was given the boot Monday night after receiving the least number of votes from last week’s viewers. Up next week, contestants will get a treat when their families, who are being flown in from all corners of the country for a day with their Nashville stars, arrive for a happy reunion. Also, Blake Shelton is scheduled to perform his current hit “Home.” –Kay West
