Kristy Lee Cook Scores Record Deal

July 1, 2008

American Idol contestant Kristy Lee Cook, season 7’s plucky cowgirl who braved Simon Cowell’s barbs week after week, has inked a record deal with a country music label.

Cook, the seventh place finisher whose performance of the Beatles’s “Eight Days a Week” was compared to “Dolly Parton on helium” by Cowell, had positioned herself as this year’s country artist on Idol, singing selections from Martina McBride and Lee Greenwood. Now, she’ll be a label mate of the show’s most famous country star, Carrie Underwood, after signing with 19 Recordings/Arista Nashville.

Cook, a 24-year-old native of Selma, Oregon, will release her first single, the up-tempo “15 Minutes of Shame” on August 11 and she’ll record her album (produced by Brett James, one of the songwriters behind Underwood’s hit “Jesus Take the Wheel”) between Idol tour dates. Her album is expected to be released this fall.

“I’ve wanted this for so many years,” Cook said in a statement. “To have the chance to be a country singer — to make the music I love — and to have enjoyed the support of so many American Idol fans this past season, it all means more than I can put into words.”

Sony BMG Nashville Chairman Joe Galante said Cook will be “very relatable to the country audience and is destined to have hits.” – Eileen Finan

Ugh, they’ll sign this hack, but no news on people that placed higher than her? Jason Castro? Brooke White? What about people more talented than her? Michael Johns? Carly Smithson? Thanks, but no thanks Kristy Lee.

me-looks are everything, and she knows how to wear next to nothing or ‘can’t breathe it’s so tight’ clothes…
I’m with you , thanks, but no thanks..

Personllay, I think she could make it big in the country industry.
But, I have heard that MJ and Jason are writing. so that makes me happy :]

skanks, but no skanks…

Marilyn July 1st, 2008

All I can say is they are hard up for someone to sign. She was terrible and I for one was glad to see her get voted off!

Abby July 1st, 2008

Kristy Lee was SOOO much better than Carly & majority of the ones who went higher up than her. It’s a shame such horrible singers are making it to the final 6 and beyond.

Alexandra July 1st, 2008

She was the worst person on the show. She shouldn’t of even made the top 24.

I am a huge country music fan, but I wouldn’t buy her cd ever!! She was not good on idol and I was honestly trying to root for her in the beginning. I was relieved when she got sent home!

vanessa July 1st, 2008

Umm, I don’t know about Jason Castro but yea they could’ve signed people that placed higher than her but at one point this season was a popularity contest otherwise Castro woulda been long gone. I loved Carly and Michael. But way to go Kristy Lee….I’m a huge country music fan!!
