It’s a dog-eat-dog competition, with one team — Galaxy and owner JD — taking an early lead Thursday on the premiere of America’s Greatest Dog. After winning a spot in the luxury suite by defeating Michael and Boston terrier Ezzie in the doggy musical chairs contest, JD initially refused his competitors a look at his posh new pad. “I’m really competitive,” he explained. Between Galaxy’s skills and JD’s attitude, the other owners took notice:
Ron: “I think JD’s in it to win it. He and Galaxy are probably the biggest threat at this time.”
Michael: “JD’s 9-year-old border collie can knit blankets and climb Mt. Everest.”
Part of JD’s prize sending a duo to the doghouse, which authentically lacked any sort of bedding. JD honed right in on David because “he stood out in a suit.” Sure enough, for David, a doctor who threw his parson russell terrier Elvis a “Bark” Mitzvah, it was an adjustment. “I’m not the outdoorsy type,” he said. Luckily, Laura took charge of a rescue mission, enlisting Travis’s and Beth Joy’s help to bring a mattress, pillows and blankets to the dog house.
Beth Joy’s tiny mutt Bella Starlet (the “Pamela Anderson of dogs”) and Brandy’s miniature schnauzer Beacon quickly established themselves as the competition’s most fashionable pooches. Bella Starlet, whose owner calls her arrived with tiny little booties on her feet. As for Beacon, Brandy said, “If she’s not wearing clothes, she’s naked.”
The elimination challenge saw three different teams choreographing routines to showcase their dogs’ skills. JD led Team Aloha, Michael led Doggy Disco, and Travis led Team Bark Wag High. Once again, JD and Galaxy impressed the judges when Galaxy jumped onto JD’s back. Travis and his boxer Presley also had a strong showing. But Brandy and Beacon struggled with their routine when Beacon couldn’t bark or wag on command.
In the end, it was Michael and Ezzie who were the first to be expelled when Michael’s grandstanding performance overshadowed his dog’s. “This is the greatest American dog, not the greatest American Michael,” Wendy told him. – Madeleine Desmond
