Big Brother: Don’t Bet Against 75-year-old Jerry

July 14, 2008

We’re fairly certain George Orwell didn’t have a Hooter’s waitress, a preacher’s son, and a “natural” bodybuilder in mind when he penned 1984. But after Sunday night’s premiere of CBS’ Big Brother, we know this: don’t bet against the old guy.

Big Brother 10 opened with a few surprises, but one surprise of the night was that Jerry, a 75-year-old great-grandfather held his own against his much younger, more spry housemates. Sometimes wearing sleeveless tops, sometimes donning short-shorts that would make Richard Simmons proud, Jerry won the Head of Household without ever having to campaign for it. (This season’s HoH was chosen by the group’s first impressions.) Clearly Jerry made quite an impression, winning a total of four votes.

Jerry toasted his HoH win with the group of twelve castmates, saying, “What a great, great bunch of kids… I love you guys already!” But don’t be fooled, according to Jerry’s bio, he’s a diehard BB fan who’s never missed one episode of the show in nine seasons.

The season also kicked off with the first challenge– “Buggin’ Out,” essentially a relay race in upturned VW Bugs, with the winner taking home one of two vintage cars and the losing team being put on the dreaded “slop” for the week.

Though the White team may have fallen short, and self-proclaimed “mixologist” Memphis ended up taking home the grand prize, it was obvious who the actual loser was. “You win one, you lose one” is the old adage, but in Memphis’s case, You win one, everyone hates you because you’re an arrogant, selfish a**.

Among the remainder of the household members, Jessie, the bodybuilder, did his best to use the word “physique” in every sentence he uttered, casting a self-imposed shadow on his obvious manliness as he seemed to accept the fact that his prodigious pecs would eventually prove to be his downfall.

Meanwhile, New Orleans native Renny did her best to use her booming voice (accompanied by the magic of a good hair piece) to overshadow her castmates. As the season opener wound down, she and Jessie found themselves on the Big Brother chopping block.

All said and done, thirteen cast members, only one character. In the end Jerry was the one to watch, at least in the season opener. Who else could pull off misquoting Richard Nixon while wearing a baseball cap, ill-fitting shorts and a sleeveless shirt? –Reagan Alexander

Tell us: Are you excited for season 10 of BB? Who will win the power of veto? Should Jessie or Renny be saved?

Bring back EVIL DICK!

Belle July 16th, 2008

I think the dude with the big muscles should go.
He was too arrogant. The next one to get the boot should be the guy who thinks he has everybody in his back pocket. Saying how Jerry has done everything he has told him to do. He better watch out, I don’t think Jerry is as naive as he thinks he is.

Andy July 16th, 2008

I love Big Brother. Dan or Angie need to win HOH this week.

Kris July 16th, 2008

I think Brian needs to go, he’s too arrogant. He thinks he has everyone fooled, but they’re on to him. Jerry’s cool, but I don’t think he’ll go too far.

David July 16th, 2008

I want to see Brian go home…usually the people who form alliances right away don’t last long!

tmiller July 17th, 2008

I am so glad that Brian is gone. Renny should be next.
