On last night’s Greatest American Dog, doggy conflicts caused drama between the owners. David and Elvis definitely earned their stay in the doghouse when Elvis showed everyone that little dogs can be feisty, biting English Bull Dog Tillman in the eye, prompting a confrontation between their two owners Rod and David.
Meanwhile Travis and boxer Presley won this week’s Dog Bone Challenge, which tested the dogs’ ability to follow orders (from basic commands like sitting to advanced instructions such as backing up). Everyone was happy when Travis sent J.D. to the doghouse. “He needs to be taken down a few notches,” Elan said.
Bill and Star were this week’s Cinderella story. The Texan duo had to deal with homesickness and injury, with Star getting into a mysterious accident that sliced her ear open. A tearful Bill rushed her to the vet, telling us, “Star is my family.”
This week’s elimination challenge–Bone Appetit–was all about will power. The dogs were required to sit calmly at a dinner table and refuse to eat a tasty dish set in front of them. Elan and her Giant Schnauzer Kenji struggled from the very beginning when she couldn’t make her dog sit still, while Rod earned laughs from the judges when he begged Tillman not to eat the steak by promising, “I’ll buy you a skateboard—two skateboards!” The bribe worked. Tillman obeyed (watch the clip).
With Rod and Tillman emerging as this week’s top dogs, David and Elvis, Beth Joy and Bella Starlet, and predictably, Elan and Kenji wound up in the bottom three.
Judge Victoria Stilwell felt that the elaborate costume Bella wore was “masking important body signals” and judge Allan Reznik felt that David’s overuse of hand signals for commands was “distracting” to Elvis. But in the end, Elan and Kenji were eliminated for Elan’s “stressful” commands. –Madeleine Desmond
