Finding the next Zac Efron or Vanessa Hudgens is not easy work. On Sunday’s ABC premiere of High School Musical: Get in the Picture, six judges, including an acting coach and choreographer, picked the most promising voices for the competition to find the next star of the HSM franchise.
The show marks Nick Lachey’s first return to reality TV since MTV’s Newlyweds made him and Jessica Simpson household names. Lachey, wearing a red polo shirt, introduced the show in front of hundreds of kids outside Walt Disney World, where they lucky ones will compete. The judges are looking for “personality, a sense of fun and ability to really bring it when it comes time to sing,” Lachey told the audience. Like American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest, Lachey waited outside the audition room and congratulated the winners and comforted the losers on their way out. One lucky contestant, who was celebrating a 16th birthday, asked Lachey to sing her “Happy birthday,” which he happily did.
As if being serenaded by Lachey isn’t prize enough, the show’s winner gets a deal with ABC and a spot in the credits in this October’s High School Musical 3: Senior Year, opening Oct. 23. – Nicholas White
