Jo & Slade: Date My Ex kicked off last night with Jo De La Rosa going on dates with four men, while her ex-fiancé Slade Smiley watched grimly from the sidelines–and every so often dispensed mob guy tough talk to her prospective suitors.
“When it comes to Jo, she’s family,” he says. “Nobody messes with my family.” Michael, a 6 ft. 6 in. sales representative that stood well above the other contenders, recognized the declaration for what it really was and remarked, “[Slade] peed on the tree and marked his turf.”
While the men, who were housed together under one roof, were taking their cues from the animal kingdom, our girl Jo was oblivious to all the testosterone-laden turf drama. She, with the help of two girlfriends Katy Metz and Myia Ingoldsby, was busy prepping for her dates at a nearby residence. Don’t we all wish we had BFF’s like Katy and Myia, who helpfully advise Jo to “skip the underwear.”
As Jo heads out for her dates, Slade sits at home moping and eavesdropping via computer. Jo’s first suitor Martin takes her our for dinner and dancing. She later refers to the 31-year old real estate agent as “Mini-Slade.” That, we gather, is not a good thing as she and the regular-sized Slade are no longer together.
On her next date, Jo is treated to an adventure on the high seas as Michael teaches her to fish–then makes her watch him gut their catch. (Hint to future contestants: don’t make Jo, or any girl, watch you gut a fish on the first date.) The pair manage to work up an appetite and share breakfast on the top deck.”I definitely could have done without the guts,” Jo says afterwards.
When Michael gets back to the men’s house, Slade throws in his helpful two cents: “If you’re going to take Jo fishing, it might be fishing for a new Louis Vuitton bag.”
Where Michael faltered, Hollywood talent manager David doesn’t make the same mistake. He sends Jo a Louis Vuitton scarf before their date. It comes in handy: he uses it on their date to blindfold Jo and lead her to a rooftop where a helicopter awaited them. David’s spirits and confidence were flying high as he showed Jo his hometown from thousands of miles off the ground. “I’d be able to offer her a lot more than…Slade,” he says.
For the final date of the night, Jo goes rock climbing with 26-year-old Nelson. “I’ve always wanted to go!” Jo squeals excitedly. The pair enjoy the view–namely, complimenting each others butts as they climb.
Slade is jealous of Nelson and Jo’s new “butt buddy” status, but is most apprehensive about David’s intentions. Before the elimination ceremony, he pulls David aside and accuses him of being on the show solely to further his career. “I don’t really like you, so I think you should drop out,” Slade tells him matter-of-factly. (Watch the clip.)
During the elimination ceremony, David states that he has no intention of quitting. As he so eloquently said earlier in the episode, “I think Jo’s a hot chick–why not fall in love?”
So as Slade watched on in horror, Jo picks David to move forward and told the other three that she thought they should “just be friends.” –Shreya Baxi
