Remembering Estelle: Share Favorite Golden Girl Moment

“Picture it, Sicily, 1912 … ”

And so began most of Estelle Getty’s memorable moments as the cranky, spunky and hilariously insulting Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls. The New Yorker — who was nominated seven times for an Emmy, winning in 1988 — turned out her share of scene stealers. Who can forget when she told the raunchy Blanche (Rue McClanahan), “You look like a prostitute.” Or when she asked Rose (Betty White) if she and a beau “played find the cannolli.” Or how she told daughter Dorothy (Bea Arthur), “Remember Dorothy, jealousy is a very ugly thing. And so are you in anything backless.” Of course she wasn’t always playing mean. There’s the scene where Dorothy and Sophia dress up like Sonny Bono and Cher.

Sadly, Getty passed away at her Hollywood Hills home Tuesday, surrounded by family and friends.

This is so sad. I DVR the shows in repeats so I always have something fun to watch.

My favorite moment: “Miami, Miami, you’ve got style.”

Also when Sophia stays in Dorothy’s room and annoys her.

RIP Estelle. May you be resting on the lanai happily with some cheesecake.

My 12 year old daughter discovered the Golden Girls show while flipping channels, on the boob tube and has been hooked. She watches it everyday and thinks “Sophia” is the funniest lady. She will be missed
