Horror music played when New Yorker David let his Jack Russell Elvis off his leash on Thursday’s Greatest American Dog because, as David said, Elvis was “the Hannibal Lecter of the house.” Laurie, the only owner to stay outside with David, let her Maltese Andrew play with the scary dog but said, “Everyone’s psychotic.”
Laurie’s abrasiveness worked against her. Arguing with Beth Joy over Bella Starlet’s attire and calling her “irrational” gave challenge winners Travis and Brandy the perfect excuse to send Laurie to the doghouse.
Despite all the drama, love was blossoming in a case of opposites attract as Travis played happily with Laura’s tiny Pomeranian Preston and Laura cuddled with his boxer Presley. “Travis and I have completely fallen in love with each other’s dogs,” Laura said. “He’s a great guy with an awesome attitude.” Travis made his intentions more clear: “I’m single and I don’t think she has a boyfriend.”
For the elimination challenge, two teams — led by captains Brandy and Travis — had to make their way through an elaborate obstacle course. On Brandy’s team, Elvis struggled to make it across the teeter-totter without falling off. Travis’s team won (despite Bella struggling to get through the rings) thanks in part to Laura and Preston dominating the tunnel.
At the judging, Brandy was called out for helping Beacon through the tunnel and Laurie for not sufficiently challenging Andrew in the hoops. Judge Wendy Diamond thought Elvis did better off the leash than on and David was quick to point out the Laurie had been in favor of using leashes. Arguing put David and Laurie in the bottom three with Rod and his skateboarding bulldog Tillman. In the end, David and Elvis were sent back to New York.
“I know I’m going home with the better dog. We’re going home to New York with our tails high and wagging,” a tearful David said. “Elvis has left the building.” — Madeleine Desmond
