Joshua Allen, the 19-year-old street-dancer from Fort Worth, Texas, who won So You Think You Can Dance Thursday, says his hospitalization “wasn’t that big of a deal.” Allen and Stephen ‘Twitch’ Boss were rushed by ambulance to Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles after collapsing during rehearsals over the weekend.
“We really thought we were okay,” Allen told reporters Friday. “We’re fine now and we just really forgot to drink and replenish our bodies … We were concentrating on doing a good show and trying to do such a good job that we kind of forgot to drink water, but everything is fine now.”
Actually, things are better than fine. As his prize, Allen will take home $250,000 and will appear in the upcoming movie Step Up 3D.
“I’m going to save it, of course,” Allen said of the prize money. “I’m going to invest it and save it and try to make it grow, so I can be comfortable in the near future.”
Allen’s onstage chemistry with contemporary dancer Katee Shean prompted reporters to ask Allen about any connection offstage.
“Me and Katee are really good friends,” Allen replied. “That’s all we are. We’re just really cool friends and when we get on stage, we’re really not ourselves. We tap into that person that we’re supposed to be portraying and I think that’s why we were such a good couple.”
As for his fans, and the viewers who voted for him, Allen had a message:
“Thank you guys so much for everything you’ve done,” he said. “And the voting, that means so much to me.” – Jed Dreben
