American Idol Adds Judge No. 4

August 25, 2008

Paula, Randy and Simon are getting some company.

Grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi is joining American Idol as a judge when the singing competition returns for its eighth season in January 2009.

“We are turning the heat up on Idol this year and are thrilled to welcome Kara to the judges’ table,” show creator Simon Fuller said in a statement released Monday. “She is a smart, sassy lady, and one of America’s most successful songwriters. We know she will bring a new level of energy and excitement to the show.”

DioGaurdi is certainly qualified for the job, having written songs for artists as diverse as Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, Santana, and Pink. Even Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers have released DioGuardi’s songs.

Adding a fourth judge may seem like a shakeup for TV’s biggest show but, according to executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz, producers always intended to have a fourth judge on the panel.

“We’ve seen from our international series that having a fourth judge creates a dynamic that benefits both the contestants and the viewers,” Frot-Coutaz said.

And at least one executive at FOX, Mike Darnell, the network’s president of alternative programming, believes that original female judge Paula Abdul deserves some companionship.

“For the past seven seasons, Paula has had to endure the experience of being the only woman at the judges’ table,” Darnell said in a statement. “With Kara by her side, Paula finally has some back-up and now there is going to be a lot more ‘girl power’ on the show.”

They probably added another woman to balance out the stupid things Paula says. Instead of getting rid of Paula, they just added another woman who can actually speak a complete thought.

I’m so excited to see what Kara is like on the show! She is an amazing songwriter who I admire a lot.

It’ll be interesting to watch! Can’t wait!

I hate this… don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the whole “girl power” thing, but I think it will be too crowded now. I think that Randy, Paula, and Simon have always done fairly well and are usually straight to the point when commenting on a performance, why do we need an additional person up there saying the same things the other judges are saying? I think it’s just a waste of time. Is the show going to be longer because I doubt you have time for an additional judge to critique. Possibly the new judge is there to cover up the many of blunders that Paula’s mouth causes with her doped up commentary… who know!? I’ll still watch the show, it’s my favorite, but I think having another judge is a waste of time and money. So, will there not be any celebrity judges this year?

What happens if 2 vote yes and 2 vote no? Do they go to Hollywood or not?

Pleeeease!
“For the past seven seasons, Paula has had to endure the experience of being the only woman at the judges’ table.”

Yeah right!

No, we have had to endoure the only idot at the judge’s table and what’s her being a woman got to do with it. Stupidity is an equal opportunity employer.

I’m excited! She looks cool. :)

I’m sure that Paula’s going to hate this. She’s not going to be the prettiest one anymore, nor will she be the one getting the guys undivided attention. They should have REPLACED Paula with Kara.

Kelly August 25th, 2008

Congrats Kara! It will be interesting to see the new dynamic unfold this season. Hopefully she will last longer than Angie Martinez, the New York DJ, did a few years back.
