Continuing on her quest to become a movie star, New York “Tiffany Pollard” stumbles on one major roadblock in Monday’s episode: her mother.
Fans of Flavor of Love and I Love New York know that her mom — known as Sister Patterson — is a woman not to be trifled with (after all, Chance, one of New York’s former suitors, called her the devil). “The relationship between my mother and I is not love-hate — it’s love-crazy,” says New York when she finds out her mother is unexpectedly coming for a visit. “She makes me crazy.” The crazy definitely doesn’t fall far from the tree.
First things first: Sister Patterson tells New York she needs to go home to New York and get career guidance from a higher power. “I know who you need to talk to,” says Patterson as she looks skyward with a heavenly choir singing on cue. (Watch the clip.) “Oh, great, my mom wants me to move back to New York with her and have her and the Lord be my manager,” New York tells the camera.
It isn’t long before Sister Patterson is wreaking havoc. She tells the wardrobe stylist how to do her job during New York’s photo shoot for In Touch magazine (worrying that her black bra is showing when she really should be worried about her daughter’s breasts escaping from her cleavage-baring dress) and then insults New York’s assistant Lizza. “Tomorrow, please do not wear those bulletproof shoes. And please make sure you comb your hair.” Hmmm, fashion advice from a woman who’s been accused of being a drag queen?
And when New York and her mom are invited to spend the day at her manager Chuck Binder’s ranch, it’s anything but a pleasant afternoon. Patterson goes into stage-mother-on-hyperdrive mode when Chuck’s friend Lynn — who New York quips to the camera “looks more like a ranch hand in a polo shirt — starts asking questions about New York’s acting background. “Her background is from God,” says Patterson. “He has gifted Tiffany. She is going to be a superstar. She’s going to be a dramatic superstar.” Meryl Streep, move over!
It turns out Lynn is a film producer who’s interested in New York for a supporting role in her movie Conversations with a Monster (we’re surprised she’s not interested in New York’s mom for the title role). But first, she tells her, New York is going to have to keep her mother at bay. “I’ll tell you this,” New York says to the camera. “Nobody’s getting in the way of my career!” – Serena Kappes
Tell us: What do you think? Will New York have the guts to tell her mother to back off from trying to control her career?
