You have to question how real a reality show is when its star wakes up in the morning freshly made up with her lip gloss gleaming and eyelashes perfectly curled. “Oh, is that you, Mr. Cameraman? When did you get here?”
That’s how New York starts her day on Monday’s episode, when she gets a wakeup call from her manager Chuck that the duo Little Jackie is interested in her singing backup and freestyling on their album. But first, she’s going to need vocal lessons.
With her mom — a.k.a. Sister Patterson — in tow, the dynamic duo set off with a bumpy cab ride to the studio. Sister Patterson accuses the hapless cab driver of eating onions in his cab, then screams, “Watch the traffic coming behind you ’cause if you get us hit, I’ma get out this car and whup you!”
After that peaceful ride, they arrive at vocal coach Roger Burnley’s studio. The poor man doesn’t know what he has in store for him when New York starts singing “Amazing Grace” and sounds like a cat being strangled. It gets even worse when Sister Patterson — who considers herself a good singer — chimes in. Ouch!
And though things start off friendly enough when New York and Sister Patterson arrive at the studio to record with Little Jackie, it isn’t long before Sister Patterson — who suggests they tell New York to sing her “oohs” and “aahs” a little “sweeter” — is butting heads with singer Imani Coppola. F-bombs are dropped all over the place and New York has to walk her mother outside to calm her down.
Back in the studio, New York works her freestyle. Afterwards, Imani compliments her on being an “artist” — but tells her she should really leave her mom at home. When New York tells her, “I don’t need her here but I know she needs to be here for me,” Imani responds, “That’s some f——- twisted s—.”
Oh, no she didn’t! New York drops the B-bomb on Imani and tells her “Ain’t nobody gonna take my positivity away from me. I got a light,” before storming out of the studio. Never lose that light, New York. Never lose it.
But, back at home, New York works up the nerve to tell her mother that she needs to “conquer this Hollywood thing on my own.” Instead of freaking out, Sister Patterson says, “I’ll go back east, but they will never turn you into a Lindsay Lohan. You need anything, pick up the phone and I’ll be here.” And with those dramatic words, she packs up her bags — and her broomstick — and she leaves. – Serena Kappes
