Project Runway Recap: And Then There Were Four . . . Still

October 2, 2008

Everything was supposed to be coming up roses for three designers on Wednesday’s Project Runway. Instead, all four of the remaining contestants broke down in tears and recriminations on the runway.

But in the end, all four of the remaining contestants were spared elimination.

The panel - plus guest judge Georgina Chapman of Marchesa - could not determine a loser for this challenge. So, all four were temporarily safe, sent home to create Fashion Week collections. Next week one designer will be auf’d, leaving only three to officially show at Bryant Park.

As for the challenge this week, the remaining four–Leanne, Korto, Jerell and Kenley– were shuttled to the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, where they had one hour to commune with nature and design an evening gown inspired by their organic outdoor experience. Each designer drew on a leafy or floral visual cue, then returned to Mood, grabbed some fabric and began sewing.

This week, though, the work was hardly the focus of the night. Instead, the designers’ allegiances emerged clearer than ever. By that we mean that nobody wanted to be around Kenley and her sour attitude. The ’50s-inspired designer was even physically isolated in the workroom, huddled by herself and explaining to the camera in her testimonial that she’s accustomed to fighting for everything she’s ever accomplished in life. We were just waiting for her to utter the classic reality show cliché - “I’m not here to make friends!” - though she stopped just short.

It’s apparent that Kenley hasn’t made friends - with her fellow designers or the judges, despite Michael Kors professing to be a fan of her work on the runway. When she left a bag behind at Mood, which contained her tulle, no other designers offered their own fabric even though many had tulle to spare. And why should they? As Leanne pointed out, Kenley has spent weeks criticizing her fellow designers and talking back to Tim Gunn and the judges.

Design-wise, Jerell won the challenge (and he tearfully accepted his praise) for a gown inspired by roses that the judges deemed the most youthful. Leanne’s lavender-colored frock earned general praise, but Kenley’s scaly purple creation and Korto’s peach-colored gown were banished to the bottom. Cue the tears!

As the judging began in earnest–and let’s all pause here to grab our hankies, shall we - the designers broke down. Korto began crying when faced with the prospect she would not make it to the finale. Jerell shed tears of joy for his accomplishments. Leanne cried before the show. And Kenley sniveled a little and seemed defensive, snapping at Heidi Klum about the intended taste-level of her gown.

But that was just the beginning. Next, the designers were asked individually to name the designers they believed deserved to accompany them to Bryant Park. Jerell, Korto and Leanne named each other, leaving a wounded Kenley to face the prospect that she would certainly not be winning Fan Favorite. Kenley decided that Jerell and Leanne deserved to join her at Bryant Park, and exchanged heated words with an irate Korto backstage.

And that was it - for this week. The judges left the designers to create their collections and deal with the interpersonal drama that played out on the runway. And we were left with Tim Gunn leading Korto, Jerell and Leanne in a group hug as Kenley sat on the sidelines. – Brian Orloff

Tell us: Did you agree with the judges decision not to eliminate anybody? Who was your favorite? And which three designers do you believe will ultimately show at Bryant Park?

Kenley should have gone home last night. She does not work and play well with others and her attitude is immature as well as down-right rude. I really liked Jerrel and Leanne’s designs and although Korto seemed to have missed the mark last night, she should go to Bryant Park with Jerrel and Leanne. As for Kenley’s little speech about having to fight for everything to get where she is…..hasn’t everyone on the show? Still no excuse for her behavior toward her fellow designers or the judges. She should thank her lucky stars she made it this far. If it were up to me she would have gone home several episodes ago. To Jerrel, Korto and Leanne….you all are amazingly talented and have class and you will go far….I would be happy to see any of you win Project Runway!

kenley needs to go. she’s so bitchy and annoying.

TEAM JERELL!
or Korto…

I look forward to seeing the collections from Jerell, Leanne, and Korto; I love that they all have such different perspectives. Kenley’s collection could also be interesting - she has done some good work on the show - but because of her attitude I do not believe she is deserving of the opportunity the judges have given her.

Can’t wait for next week!

Um… it was a tough decision, and I agree with the judges, but Kenley should’ve gone home. I liked LeAnne’s, Korto’s and Jerell’s! The three designers I ultimately believe will show at Bryant Park are LeAnn, Jerrell and Korto, not that crazy biatch, Kenley!

If Kenley is one of the final three, it will be because the producers want to keep her there for entertainment value. Kenley is creative designer, yet of the four of them she has shown the least amount of diversity in her designs. They all look like 50s vintage. I almost cringed at how she spoke to Heidi last night and I cannot believe that the judges don’t get angrier at her for her insolence. I also thought it was lame that she is so unwilling to admit that she messed up the hip-hop outfit she accused LeAnn of sabotaging her on the runway.

What is with the judges this year? Kenley did not in any way deserve to be spared last night. Truthfully, I feel she should have gone weeks ago. Her work has not been up to the standards of Jerrell, Korto or Leanne. She is the most ignorant, rude, arrogant designer the show has ever had and I wish the judges would have been as rude to her as she was to them. I agree that if Kenley makes the final three, it will only be for ratings and that is just wrong. Congrats to Jerrell, Korto and Leanne - well deserved. As for Kenley, I wouldn’t buy anything that she designed, especially due to her attitude and disrespect for those professionals in the business. If I were her family and friends, I would be beyond embarrassed by her attitude and disrespect to the judges and Tim - so uncalled for. Such a brat - she doesn’t deserve to still be on the show. I hope that her line fails miserably and she gets the boot next week - she does not deserve to compete at Bryant Park.

All the gowns sucked. Jerell’s a talentless jerk and doesn’t deserve to be there. Kenley doesn’t either because she’s bitchy and overly confident in herself. Leanne let her nerves get the best of her and Korto couldn’t focus. I think those two will calm down when they go home to do their collections and wow the judges at Bryant Park. Korto and Leanne all the way!

Kenley should be long gone. The other 3 are far superior designers (not to mention human beings) by comparison.

CORNBREAD October 2nd, 2008

Watching Project Runway last night was very hard for me. This was the first episode where it seems that Producers have no say so about who goes home. Also, it was hard for me because this was the first show that Korto has been in the bottom two. Jerell is NOT a talentless JERK! To me, Jerell represents to sportsmanship and class to every design. He, along with Korto have been very terriffic designers. Every week, him and Korto consistantly delivers, and they deserve to be in Bryant Park.

And the way that Jerell and Korto got Kenley RIGHT TOGETHER? Honey better go sit down somewhere before they give her the business! LOL! Looking at the way they edited the commercial for the finale, I don’t know if Jerell is going to show, but I PRAY TO GOD HE DOES! LORD I DO!

jlp October 2nd, 2008

This was a completely bogus decision. Jerrell won, and he’s STILL not guaranteed a spot at Fashion Week? That’s nonsense. If they wanted to have a face-off between the bottom two, as they did last season, I could have lived with that (though I do think Kenley should have been auf’ed). But this decision is ridiculous.
