Misty May-Treanor has been forced to bow out of participating in Dancing with the Stars, it was announced live on the Monday night show.
May-Treanor, a two-time Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist, suffered an injury during dance rehearsal with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy on Friday.
“I ruptured my Achilles tendon and from that point on I knew I couldn’t continue. I’m out and I’m really bummed,” May-Treanor told PEOPLE immediately after the show. “We don’t know why these things happen. They could happen to anyone. I feel like I was only just beginning here.”
May-Treanor will have surgery later this week, followed by a nine-month rehabilitation.
But, she promises, “I will be back – on the volleyball court and maybe on the ballroom. I would come back to the ballroom if they asked me back,” says May-Treanor, who says this may be the perfect time for her and husband Matt Treanor, a professional baseball player, to start a family.
“Having nine months off? That could happen. I was planning to take a little time off next year anyway, so this solidifies that,” she says. – Monica Rizzo
