Cheryl Burke’s Dancing Pals Speak Out in Support

October 12, 2008

After putting on a few pounds during the break and getting flak for it when Dancing With the Stars premiered its seventh season, Cheryl Burke fought back, telling PEOPLE, “You don’t have to be anorexic to be beautiful.”

Now, her friends and colleagues are speaking out in support of the two-time Dancing champ.

“That’s the one part of the Internet that I find at times to be very unsettling. It encourages this sort of cowardly unkindness,” DWTS judge Carrie Ann Inaba says. “It takes a lot of courage for people to stand tall just as they are. She is a beautiful talented girl who is a role model to many girls out there for just being who she is.”

Fellow dancer and close friend Kym Johnson says Burke, a size four, decided to draw attention to the issue to encourage people to love themselves as they are.

“Cheryl is a very level-headed girl. Obviously, [the comments] were hurtful, but she can rise above that stuff. She’s a very classy, strong woman and ultimately she didn’t let it get to her,” says Johnson, noting that neither Burke nor any of the dancers have been pressured to look a certain way. “[The show's producers] like the healthy bodies all of us dancers have. Cheryl’s body is incredible. Everybody comments on how she looks and how beautiful her body is. I found it really bizarre people were saying stuff like that.”

Burke’s season six partner, actor Cristian de la Fuente agrees.

“We live in a very plastic society where everybody needs to be a size zero. If somebody gains five pounds or ten pounds it’s not a crime,” de la Fuente says. “It’s life.” – Monica Rizzo

Cheryl, you have my support and I admire you for who you are. It doesn’t matter how many pounds you gained or what so ever! It is about eating healthy and loving yourself for who you are! I praise you, and you have my support…. I am a great fan of DWTS………..

While I applaud Cheryl Burke for standing up for herself, the magazine article gives the impression that she feels “uncomfortable” about her size 2. If Hollywood REALLY wants to end this ridiculous obsession with thiness, actresses are going to have to stop giving into the ideals. I bet she shows up on the cover of every magazine in 2 months with the claim of “How I Lost the Weight”.

“Uncomfortable about a size 2″

no wonder so many girls are in trouble with their self image, if this is what they hear.
Cheryl Burke looks great and she knows it.

Marcy October 12th, 2008

Where does Cheryl Burke say she’s uncomfortable being a size 2? She says she’s a size four and proud of it. Who wouldn’t want to have her body any day of the week. She is a great role model for positive body image. The reason she is speaking out is because people think she needs to look like a pencil. She is awesome and I hope she doesn’t change a thing. Go Cheryl! Your fans love you just the way you are.

Yeah, I don’t get where yall are are getting the “uncomfortable about a size 2″ stuff. This article says she’s a size FOUR, and the entire time she’s made it quite clear that she loves herself and her body and won’t change for anyone. GO CHERYL!

Pamela October 12th, 2008

I think it was somewhere else she said she was uncomfortable being a size 2…but what she meant is that she would feel uncomfortable being that skinny. So would I for that matter.

Jonathan October 12th, 2008

It was really nice of Cheryl Burke’s DWTS pals and Carrie Ann Inaba to defend Cheryl! Also, congrats to the other couple who also renewed their vows along with J.Lo and Marc Anthony, and it sucks that the ceremony wasn’t outside, but maybe they’ll be another time?

Micki October 12th, 2008

Love, love, love, that girl! The men I know who watch the show, do so because of her. None of them have a problem with how she looks or what she weighs. Cheryl Burke is ‘fun’nomenal!

SUGAR SUGAR October 12th, 2008

CHERYL, GET OVER YOUR SELF. IT’S THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS. EVERYONE KNOWS CHERYL LOVES NOBOBY BUT CHERYL. JUST WORRY ABOUT YOUR DANCING. SORRY GIRL, THIS IS NOT YOUR SEASON TO WIN.
