On Wednesday night’s ANTM, the remaining seven contestants shot their first Cover Girl commercials and got wind of a very special surprise: Amsterdam is in their future.
During their drive back home from their last photo shoot, Elina and Marjorie were once again feeling misunderstood because of their European upbringing, but this time Sam and Sheena weren’t having it. They ripped into Elina and Marjorie, questioning whether they even like being in America and uh, oh yeah, “Didn’t you guys move here when you were eight,” asked Sam about their so-called European upbringing.
The next day during the challenge the girls were taught how to model accessories. Marjorie managed to pull a Tara Reid when the sexy skintight dress she was modeling fell off from the top without her even noticing. Joslyn’s attempt at modeling a belt resembled a “kind of strip show” as she tried putting it over her head. Elina, who was panicking because she couldn’t breathe in the spandex and almost had a breakdown actually ended up winning the challenge. Her prize: a holiday fashion story in Seventeen magazine, which she got to share with two other contestants of her liking.
Back at the house, more drama ensued when Sheena confronted Elina about her need to blame everything on her background and she told Elina that the “bottom line is we all come from some sort of background, whether we have been repressed, whether we have been racially criticized. Stop putting it on being European. Grow out of it.” Sam accused Elina of being a hypocrite because on the one hand she was complaining about her European upbringing and on the other she was willing to do a holiday-themed shoot even though she’s an atheist and doesn’t observe Christmas.
The tension was still in the air the following day as the remaining seven models prepared for their first Cover Girl commercial for the new eye enhancer blast collection shadows and mascara. Joslyn, who hadn’t been feeling well the day before, woke up sick but chose to push through. The models arrived at a private home in Bel Air, where to their surprise, cycle 10 winner Whitney Thompson was lounging by the poolside to greet them along with Mr. Jay.
Unlike past seasons where models usually have a hard time memorizing their lines, they were able to use a teleprompter this time around. While Sam brought her natural energy to the set, Elina’s delivery was too controlled and very monotone. Director Frank Ockenfels called her entire performance a closed fist. McKey was simply clueless “and clueless does not make a Cover Girl,” said Mr. Jay. It was Analeigh and Sheena who proved to be naturals in front of the rolling cameras. Analeigh was so on the money that even Tyra dubbed it “the best Cover Girl commercial I have seen in the history of America’s Next Top Model.” And Jay Alexander called Sheena an “inky slink” because of the way she moves, “she inks and she slinks.”
Of all nights, this was probably the worst to be eliminated on. After the models were asked to strut their stuff wearing wooden shoes, Tyra surprised them with the news that the remaining six contestants would be heading to Amsterdam.
In the end it was Joslyn who got sent home although Elina got a nice scare. Even though Joslyn managed to deliver an over-the-top and much exaggerated performance without looking like she was as sick as a dog, her effort fell short. –Alondra Hernandez
