Finalists David Cook and David Archuleta aren’t the only ones benefiting from ratings powerhouse American Idol’s season 7. The FOX hit has delivered more than $64 million from its April fundraising event Idol Gives Back to six charities, according the Associated Press.
The star-studded show, which featured appearances from Brad Pitt, Miley Cyrus, Reese Witherspoon, Snopp Dogg, Fergie, Bono and many others, helped raise funds via toll-free lines and the Idol Web site.
Among the charities receiving donations are Make It Right — Pitt’s campaign to help New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina — The Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the Children’s Defense Fund.
Idol creator and executive producer Simon Fuller was struck by the generosity of viewers. “The fact that American Idol has the ability to inspire millions, create hope and change lives is simply remarkable,” he said in a statement.
